With a planet-killing asteroid on a collision course with Earth, it's up to a motley crew of scientists and oil drillers (yes, oil drillers) to save the earth. With 18 days to impact, a team from NASA (led by Billy Bob Thornton) frantically tries to find a solution but ends up turning to an outside contractor. Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis) and his team of oilmen are called upon to save the planet as only they can. ARMAGEDDON may boast impressive special effects, but it's the cast--including Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler, Steve Buscemi, and Owen Wilson--that gives the film its humor and heart. Tyler's father Steven Tyler and his band Aerosmith contributed the Oscar-nominated hit "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" to the soundtrack. [More]

...as a summer popcorn flick, the film has its moments and is ultimately enjoyable, even though the fate of the planet seems to take a backseat plotwise to the fate of Liv Tyler and Ben Affleck's goo-goo-eye-making.

Relatively silly and far too long disaster movie.

Along with the rest of the audience, I jumped when I was meant to jump, laughed when I was meant to laugh, and swallowed a lump in my throat when I was meant to feel moved.

Yet while the movie's emotions grow a bit gentler, they remain as forced and artificial as ever, pushing market-tested buttons - heroics, patriotism, family values - with a monotony that denies us any chance to think or even feel for ourselves.

It is impossible to take a movie like this seriously. Unfortunately, the movie tries to force us to do just that a few times too many.

In the end, the script is probably the only true thing that I felt was lacking.

Michael Bay's movie is frenetic from start to its conclusion two-and-one half long hours later, leaving the audience scarcely a moment to catch its breath.

...the latest in a line of increasingly-stupid action pictures that amazes audiences with flashy special effects and nifty action sequences, but leaves them high and dry in both the character and story departments.

A real movie about courage in space is Apollo 13, in which fear and sacrifice have meaning. This jingoistic, overblown spectacle is about whistling in the dark.

Armageddon is far from boring, but it's chock-full of explosions and loud noises, which becomes annoying in a hurry.
