Anthology is thrilled to present the NY Theatrical Premiere Run of Audience of One, a documentary that follows an obsessive pastor on his quest to produce Gravity: The Shadow of Joseph, a $50-million biblical science fiction movie that would redefine the Hollywood epic.

Ten years ago, Pastor Richard Gazowsky from the Voice of Pentecost Church in San Francisco received a “prophetic whisper”, a directive from God to make movies for the Lord. Using donations from his congregation, he slowly transformed his church into a fully-functioning movie studio, and Christian WYSIWYG Filmworks was born. After experimenting on a number of small projects, Pastor Gazowsky announced that he and his WYSIWYG crew were going to make Gravity, a cross between Star Wars and The Ten Commandments.

Audience of One is a documentary that chronicles the making of Gravity. This vérité-style film goes inside a Pentecostal church, where the charismatic Gazowsky leads his loyal cast and crew on an incredible journey that tests the limits of faith. From pre-production at their church, to shooting principal photography in Italy, to leasing an enormous studio on Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay, Audience of One keeps pace with an embattled church production that looks to God in order to keep the dream alive. Full of humor and pathos, what transpires is a story of obsession, faith, and delusion, in the tradition of earlier chronicles of kamikaze filmmaking, such as Les Blank’s Burden of Dreams and George Hickenlooper’s Hearts of Darkness. --© Anthology [More]

Real-life mockumentary.

Mildly engaging and absurdly funny, but that barely compensates for its lack of insight and profound revelations about Pastor Richard Gazowsky.

Somewhere above us, God is watching Audience of One and chuckling. Mere mortals will be doing likewise.

It's a product of a dangerous sort of tunnel vision that afflicts a number of documentarians these days.

Audience of One follows the descent of a scrappy indie production into a full-blown fiasco and megalomaniacal folly.

At first, we’re led to think we’re in for a funny, affectionate portrayal of eccentricity. But as equipment malfunctions and debt piles up, it becomes clear the actual subject is the dangerously empowering nature of fanaticism.

Ridiculous as it is, Audience of One is more chilling than funny.

I'm still recommending it, mainly because of the great story it hints at and for the way it genuinely captures the excitement and heartbreak of filmmaking.

Entertaining in a one-dimensional way, but ultimately rather sad, partly because of the level of delusion on display and partly because Gazowsky and company are an easy target.
