Oscar Nominations Announced: "Little Miss Sunshine," "Dreamgirls," "Borat" Deemed Worthy
The expected heavy hitters made the grade -- Scorsese, Whitaker, "Dreamgirls" -- but there were a handful of surprises...let's just say, if you thought you'd never read "the Oscar-nominated 'Borat'" in print, think again! The nominees for the 79th annual Academy Awards are in!
Yes, "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan" stole a nomination for best adapted screenplay, and will compete against "Children of Men," "Notes on a Scandal," "The Departed," and "Little Children" in that category. High Five!
Fans of Ryan Gosling will be happy to know that he made the Oscar list for his work in "Half Nelson," joining company like Leonardo DiCaprio ("The Departed"), Peter O'Toole ("Venus") and Forest Whitaker ("Last King of Scotland") in the lead actor category. The fifth nominee? The Fresh Prince himself, Will Smith ("Pursuit of Happiness").
Golden Globe winner Martin Scorsese is also up for the best director Oscar in a near-rematch of that race. This time, the Academy's given only one nod to Clint Eastwood ("Letters From Iwo Jima") to make room for "United 93" director Paul Greengrass.
"Little Miss Sunshine" tot Abigail Breslin has a nomination for supporting actress and will face off with "Babel" twosome Adriana Barraza and Rinko Kikuchi, "Notes on a Scandal"'s Cate Blanchett, and "Dreamgirls" star Jennifer Hudson. Breslin's ten years old. Is that a new youngest-ever nominee?
"Dreamgirls" nabbed noms in both supporting categories (Golden Globe winners Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy, respectively), as well as art direction, costume design, and three of the five Best Song nominations. We'll see if voters can differentiate between "Listen," "Love You I Do," and "Patience" or if they'll split their "Dreamgirls" votes and send the Oscar to Melissa Etheridge's "Inconvenient Truth" song or Randy Newman's ditty from "Cars."
And then, the other awards. Those categories that enable certain sub-performing films to call themselves "Oscar-nominated."

on Jan 23 2007 10:55 AM I had hoped Children of Men would be nominated for Best Picture, but I can't argue with any of the ones that were nominated (for once). I liked Dreamgirls, but I thought there was no way it deserved Best Picture nomination, so I'm glad more deserving one's did. Where the hell is Matt Damon for The Departed??? I thought his inner conflict made the movie. I like Mark Walberg, and thought he was hilarious, but does he really deserve an Oscar nomination for his small role? It wasn't exactly a demanding role. Why is there always one movie that is nominated for Best Picture that doesn't get nominated for Best Director? It's gotten predictable. I admit I haven't seen Volver, yet, but did it not qualify for Best Foreign Film due to some stupid technicality that precludes far too many good foreign films? Borat getting a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination was a nice surprise. Probably no chance of winning, though. Can they ever get Best Documentary nominations right? No Dixie Chicks:Shut Up and Sing, no Wordplay, no Who Killed the Electric Car? Did the nomination comittee feel that the inclusion of an Inconvenient Truth was enough `lefty' movies? (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 23 2007 11:07 AM I found Pan's Labryinth to be asthetically pleasing and beautiful but not overall great. It should win the makeup easily and some of the other technical categories as well. Really pleased with Ryan Gosling being nominated, I (similar to most others) have been hoping that he would get his due for his role. I would love to see him win, but in the end it will most likely go to Whitaker or O'toole (both of which I adore seeing on screen every time) (Reply to this) |

on Jan 23 2007 11:35 AM I think my biggest shock was not seeing The Dixie Chicks' "Shut Up And Sing" nominated for Feature Documentary. It was an outstanding documentary that I'm still recommending to friends. Did we really need two documentaries on Iraq in there? It'll be a battle between "An Inconvenient Truth" and "Jesus Camp" I think. Both are frightening for completely different reasons. And why did we need three songs from Dreamgirls nominated for Best Original Song? Prince and Sheryl Crow should've filled two of those (now wasted to me) spots. Hopefully Melissa Etheridge will take it. The only thing I want to see Dreamgirls win is Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Hudson. That way she can complete her upstaging of the overrated Beyonce. And can't forget to congratulate Ryan Gosling, Pan's Labyrinth and Little Miss Sunshine for all of their so deserving nominations. (Reply to this) |

I was afraid Children of Men, United 93 and Pan's Labyrinth wouldn't get recognized this year cuz of the timing of their releases. surprised 'Shut Up and Sing' and 'Wordplay' weren't nominated for best documentary. Overall good job academy (for once :P) (Reply to this) |

on Jan 23 2007 11:51 AM Have to agree with most that overall I'm not dissatisfied with the picks. There are some good ones in here and most have gotten their due (was happy Pan's got as much as it did). The Academy is still a joke though, that's never going to change. I've always hated how it's always 5 or 6 movies that get most nominations. It's like, "Hey, this aspect of the film was great! Let's dump 5 more nods on them because this one aspect really makes the film awesome!" You know how many films are made each year? Neither do I, but it's a whole lot. There are some good ones out there that just aren't getting any respect. Like I said though, overall, this year isn't too bad. There have been much, much worse. (Reply to this) |
