on Jan 23 2007 12:18 PM Dreamgirls was allright but I'm glad it didn't get the best picture nod. Dicaprio did good in Blood Diamond but should have been nominated for The Departed. I'm also supprised Nickolson didn't get nominated. I'm still happy with the nominations for The Departed, Little Miss Sunshine, The Illusionist, and Pirates. Some of these films I still need to see, so I don't know how to feel about them though. As for best song hopefully Randy Newman wins. As for Borat it isn't that good at all and is my least favorite film to get a nomination that I've seen. (Reply to this) |

on Jan 23 2007 12:31 PM I would think Blood Diamond has to be the big surprise of the nominations field. While I think well-deserving, I was afraid too many critics faulted the movie to be a major player in the awards. With two acting nods, and a couple of technical nods, this one can finally be seen as somewhat of a success, even with its disappointing box office run. While I don't think there is any chance that Leonardo or Djimoun will win, it should be gratifying enough that their performances didn't go unnoticed. There are a couple of surprises, however, but somewhat welcomed. Jack Nicholson wasn't nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Departed like many had suggested, but Mark Wahlberg was. While Marky Mark was very good in the movie and I will be pulling for him or Eddie Murphy to win, I don't think he was better than Jack. Also, Prince not getting a nomination for Best Song after winning the Golden Globe seems a little shocking as well. I was hoping Sasha Baron Cohen was going to get a nod for Borat, but I'm glad the screenplay was nominated. I hope the main awards go like this: Best Picture: The Departed (Seems like a weak year in terms of a clear frontrunner) Best Director: Martin Scorsese (although I must say that Paul Greengrass seems deserving as well, but it's just way past acceptable that Scorsese wins) Best Actor: Forest Whitaker (Something tells me, however, that a surprise candidate might win...Ryan Gosling) Best Actress: Helen Mirren (Seems like a no-brainer) Best Supporting Actor: Eddie Murphy (The Academy likes to show a small inkling of hipness each year...3 6 Mafia anyone?; which is why a surprise in Mark Wahlberg would be welcomed) Best Supporting Actress: Jennifer Hudson (no-brainer as well) (Reply to this) |

on Jan 23 2007 12:33 PM In reply to this comment (#853729) "Dreamgirls"-I couldn't agree more I agree 100% with villain 78's comments on Dreamgirls. I enjoyed the film, but other than Hudson and Murphy's performances, I did not think it was Oscar-worthy. It was nominated for what it deserved. I do have to give kudos to the Academy for nominating Borat for best adapted screenplay. It certainly isn't the typical Oscar nominee, but it certainly is original. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 23 2007 12:54 PM Dreamgirls No Nomination? What A Dream I'm so thankful Dreamgirls did not get nominated for Best Picture. I'm slightly dissapointed with no Brad Pitt (Babel) or Clint Mansell (The Fountain), but oh well. "Letters From Iwo Jima", "Babel", or "The Departed" are all deserving of winning. But even if "The Queen" (no chance) or "Little Miss Sunshine" win, I won't be incredibly angry. If Emmanuel Lebezki doesn't win cinematography for "Children of Men" it's a shame. (Reply to this) |

on Jan 23 2007 12:55 PM Racist idiots! A lot of stupid white people here!!! Losers! P.S. Beyonce is still richer than you and a better person than you clowns! (Reply to this) |

on Jan 23 2007 01:30 PM In reply to this comment (#853748) Pathetic! Typical. A movie sucks but has blacks in it so to say it sucks makes us racist rather than right. It's people like you that prevent the race card from ever not being played in society. Get a life! I don't care if you're black, purple or green; People like you are a loser in any color! What, a movie has mainly black people in it so it has to win an Oscar otherwise the academy is racist? Did "Crash" not win last year? (back when the academy was a bunch of homophobes for not awarding the other film). I'd love to see "Letters From Iwo Jima" win, but I hated, hated "Dreamgirls." And I'm white. So, what, I love Asians but hate blacks? Damn my confused cracker-ass! Way to point out the amount of money she has as a reason to admire her. Just keep those sereotypes alive, brother. on Jan 23 2007 01:31 PM MONSTER HOUSE should win best animated film, but it won't. If anyone had any sense, TIDELAND would be up for a number of awards, including best picture. (Reply to this) |

on Jan 23 2007 01:39 PM mostly a nice job with the noms- go little miss su Generally I like the picks. Glad to see Little Miss Sunshine instead of Dreamgirls like everyone else on this comment board. It had heart and laughts without being too cheesy or too predictable. Probably the most enjoyable movie of the year. I was hoping to see Pan's Labyrinth recognized as best picture, since I thought the visuals, the construction, the themes, the score and the story were beautiful. DeCaprio was great in the Departed, and ok in Blood Diamond, an odd choice for them to single out Blood Diamond. Damon was excellent in Departed as well. Mark Wallberg is good, but that role was not Oscar worthy. I also would have like to have seen a bit more attention for Children of Men, what a great film Overall a good year...The best picture doesn't seem to be so obvious as in years past. I predict Departed and Scorsese (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 23 2007 01:54 PM See I loved Dreamgirls because of its craft. It was well put together but a film has got to be more than just "well put together" to be a best picture. I'm glad it got the nominations it did and I'm happy it leads in terms of total nominations. It shows to prove that the Academy sees the craft that was put in. But best picture? The Departed and Babel are far better pictures than Dreamgirls. I do agree that it's ignorant to dismiss the film based on popularity. So you hate Beyonce. Put that aside. It's a very good film with a broadway score that deserves kudos. So it's no surprise that the academy awarded the most nominations to composer Henry Kreiger through the original song catergory. I'm slowly simmering about Brad Pitt getting snubbed for Babel though. And I'm one of the few who didn't find Borat funny. Loved Pan's Labyrinth and I'm hoping Peter O'Toole pulls an upset. on Jan 23 2007 01:56 PM In reply to this comment (#853748) Beyonce is so overhyped it is pathetic. Glad she did not get nominated. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 23 2007 02:06 PM I'm very surprised that Children of Men wasn't nominated for best picture. Little Miss Sunshine was entirely mediocre and I don't really understand why it was nominated. Also, Cuaron's exclusion in the best director category is rather perplexing. My vote would go to Babel and Inarritu, respectively, but Children of Men deserves a lot more recognition than this. on Jan 23 2007 02:08 PM I'm a little sad that some things got ignored (The Fountain for cinemtography and speical effects please!), but the Little Miss Sunshine love makes up for it. As far as the Dreamgirls scandle goes, I'm surprised that it wasn't nominated but I guess after really steller musicals like Moulin Rouge and Chicago getting nominated, Dreamgirls with it's strong voices, great ideas but less than impressive story telling just can't measure up. I'm happy for the Jennifer Hudson love though. (Reply to this) |

on Jan 23 2007 02:28 PM where is leo in the departed? was he really that good in Blood diamond? i haven't seen it yet. (Reply to this) |

on Jan 23 2007 02:41 PM i agree no nom for leo in teh departed? most importantly no nom for NICHOLSON or even DAMON but noms for Will Smith in "The Pursuit of Happyness" (Sony Pictures Releasing) Forest Whitaker in "The Last King of Scotland" (Fox Searchlight) Alan Arkin in "Little Miss Sunshine" (Fox Searchlight) WHAT THE FUC**** HELL?! (Reply to this) |

on Jan 23 2007 03:05 PM Click???? Poseidon????? What the hell is alli have to say about that....x-men should have taken both their places and the fountain got srewed to, along with catherine ohara...oh well at least dreamgirls didnt get a best picture nom (Reply to this) |
|
on Jan 23 2007 03:19 PM shut up about the fountain i guess if you're a movie that no one went to see and has no critical acclaim you probably shouldn't expect to get an Oscar nom. (Reply to this) |
|
on Jan 23 2007 03:36 PM I praying for Letters From Iwo Jima to win. That movie was amazing. Ken Watanabe deserves an oscar nom. imo. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 23 2007 03:39 PM "THE DEPARTED" SHOULD WIN BEST PICTURE BUT IT WILL BE HARD TO BEAT "THE QUEEN" (Reply to this) |

on Jan 23 2007 04:13 PM not bad..... Im a little suprised with miss sunshine,an excellent film, but best pic? I do believe the fountain is way better than the critics would like us to believe, cinematography, score and costume design were deserved, and aronofsky made a film that should be looked back upon as unfairly maligned. I had a small hope that stranger than fiction would sneak a couple noms in as well, although I can imagine the reasoning behind its lack of recognition. Best laugh of the Noms? the fact that we can now say the words " Oscar nominated film " in conjunction with Click. (Reply to this) |

on Jan 23 2007 04:27 PM Pan's Labyrinth is getiing some credit, but not enough. I tihnk it should've snagged a best picture nomination, as well as Children of Men. I have yet to see Letters From Iwo Jima, and I'm hoping to this weekend, but I am sick to no end of Eastwood winning Oscar after Oscar. They had better give it to Scorsese, the man who truly deserves it after all these years. (Reply to this) |
