on Jan 23 2007 09:53 AM Thank god Dreamgirls did not get nominated for Best Picture. It is even sweeter that Beyonce did not get nominated. Both are so overhyped and overrated it is comical. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 23 2007 10:04 AM aghhhhhhh Clint Mansell didn't get any nom for his score for The Fountain, damn (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 10:10 AM I really like this nominations, especially because it has a lot of mexicanas (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 10:12 AM sacha baron cohen got robbed. will smith? come on (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 23 2007 10:21 AM Pan's Labyrinth should be nominated for Best Picture. They can take out any one of those five. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 23 2007 10:33 AM I'm glad Dreamgirls didn't get the best picture nomination but dominated the trade nominations (costume, production design, etc) because that's where the real strength of the film lies, in the making of it. A well put together movie but a bit too shallow to be a best picture. Glad Murphy and Hudson got the noms. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 10:34 AM ben affleck should have gotten a nomination for supporting for Hollywoodland. and where's Volver for best foreign and sacha baron cohen for best actor? and leo dicaprio should have been nominated for the departed, not blood diamond. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 10:40 AM Maybe being ignored for an oscar will put a tiny pinprick in that thick bubble of conceit that surrounds Beyonce. It must hurt her oversized ego to be upstaged by an American Idol hopeful. I am loving it. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 10:43 AM so at least some of my fav's got a little attention. Cinematography is the only group that I would have chosen exactly the same. too bad for clint and kronos (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 10:46 AM Cinematography... No "The Fountain"??? (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 10:46 AM Where the heck is brad pitt for babel? Congrats ryan gosling (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 23 2007 10:50 AM Phew...Dreamgirls didn't get nominated for Best Picture! I'm happy now. But...no Clint Mansell for Best Original Score? The Fountain's score was better than any other's this year. But, other than that, I'm happy with this nominations. I expect either The Departed or Babel to take the big award. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 10:55 AM I had hoped Children of Men would be nominated for Best Picture, but I can't argue with any of the ones that were nominated (for once). I liked Dreamgirls, but I thought there was no way it deserved Best Picture nomination, so I'm glad more deserving one's did. Where the hell is Matt Damon for The Departed??? I thought his inner conflict made the movie. I like Mark Walberg, and thought he was hilarious, but does he really deserve an Oscar nomination for his small role? It wasn't exactly a demanding role. Why is there always one movie that is nominated for Best Picture that doesn't get nominated for Best Director? It's gotten predictable. I admit I haven't seen Volver, yet, but did it not qualify for Best Foreign Film due to some stupid technicality that precludes far too many good foreign films? Borat getting a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination was a nice surprise. Probably no chance of winning, though. Can they ever get Best Documentary nominations right? No Dixie Chicks:Shut Up and Sing, no Wordplay, no Who Killed the Electric Car? Did the nomination comittee feel that the inclusion of an Inconvenient Truth was enough `lefty' movies? (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 23 2007 11:07 AM I found Pan's Labryinth to be asthetically pleasing and beautiful but not overall great. It should win the makeup easily and some of the other technical categories as well. Really pleased with Ryan Gosling being nominated, I (similar to most others) have been hoping that he would get his due for his role. I would love to see him win, but in the end it will most likely go to Whitaker or O'toole (both of which I adore seeing on screen every time) (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 11:24 AM Its going to be funny when Borat sweeps all its nominations...and Dreamgirls flops like a fish outa water (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 11:27 AM In reply to this comment (#853731) Well said. I get so sick of seeing on every magazine cover. This movie has overexposed her to the point where you cannot pick up a magazine or watch EW w/o having her forced down our throats. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 11:35 AM I think my biggest shock was not seeing The Dixie Chicks' "Shut Up And Sing" nominated for Feature Documentary. It was an outstanding documentary that I'm still recommending to friends. Did we really need two documentaries on Iraq in there? It'll be a battle between "An Inconvenient Truth" and "Jesus Camp" I think. Both are frightening for completely different reasons. And why did we need three songs from Dreamgirls nominated for Best Original Song? Prince and Sheryl Crow should've filled two of those (now wasted to me) spots. Hopefully Melissa Etheridge will take it. The only thing I want to see Dreamgirls win is Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Hudson. That way she can complete her upstaging of the overrated Beyonce. And can't forget to congratulate Ryan Gosling, Pan's Labyrinth and Little Miss Sunshine for all of their so deserving nominations. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 11:42 AM I am a bit surprised that Leo got the nod for Blood Diamond and not the Departed..wtf? He was much, much better in the much better Departed. The big question is whether or not Scorcese will finally get the Oscar... well academy default Clint Eastwood made a movie this year so... we all know what usually happens there (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 11:49 AM THANK GOD!!! I was afraid Children of Men, United 93 and Pan's Labyrinth wouldn't get recognized this year cuz of the timing of their releases. surprised 'Shut Up and Sing' and 'Wordplay' weren't nominated for best documentary. Overall good job academy (for once :P) (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 11:51 AM Have to agree with most that overall I'm not dissatisfied with the picks. There are some good ones in here and most have gotten their due (was happy Pan's got as much as it did). The Academy is still a joke though, that's never going to change. I've always hated how it's always 5 or 6 movies that get most nominations. It's like, "Hey, this aspect of the film was great! Let's dump 5 more nods on them because this one aspect really makes the film awesome!" You know how many films are made each year? Neither do I, but it's a whole lot. There are some good ones out there that just aren't getting any respect. Like I said though, overall, this year isn't too bad. There have been much, much worse. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 12:18 PM Dreamgirls was allright but I'm glad it didn't get the best picture nod. Dicaprio did good in Blood Diamond but should have been nominated for The Departed. I'm also supprised Nickolson didn't get nominated. I'm still happy with the nominations for The Departed, Little Miss Sunshine, The Illusionist, and Pirates. Some of these films I still need to see, so I don't know how to feel about them though. As for best song hopefully Randy Newman wins. As for Borat it isn't that good at all and is my least favorite film to get a nomination that I've seen. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 12:31 PM I would think Blood Diamond has to be the big surprise of the nominations field. While I think well-deserving, I was afraid too many critics faulted the movie to be a major player in the awards. With two acting nods, and a couple of technical nods, this one can finally be seen as somewhat of a success, even with its disappointing box office run. While I don't think there is any chance that Leonardo or Djimoun will win, it should be gratifying enough that their performances didn't go unnoticed. There are a couple of surprises, however, but somewhat welcomed. Jack Nicholson wasn't nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Departed like many had suggested, but Mark Wahlberg was. While Marky Mark was very good in the movie and I will be pulling for him or Eddie Murphy to win, I don't think he was better than Jack. Also, Prince not getting a nomination for Best Song after winning the Golden Globe seems a little shocking as well. I was hoping Sasha Baron Cohen was going to get a nod for Borat, but I'm glad the screenplay was nominated. I hope the main awards go like this: Best Picture: The Departed (Seems like a weak year in terms of a clear frontrunner) Best Director: Martin Scorsese (although I must say that Paul Greengrass seems deserving as well, but it's just way past acceptable that Scorsese wins) Best Actor: Forest Whitaker (Something tells me, however, that a surprise candidate might win...Ryan Gosling) Best Actress: Helen Mirren (Seems like a no-brainer) Best Supporting Actor: Eddie Murphy (The Academy likes to show a small inkling of hipness each year...3 6 Mafia anyone?; which is why a surprise in Mark Wahlberg would be welcomed) Best Supporting Actress: Jennifer Hudson (no-brainer as well) (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 12:33 PM In reply to this comment (#853729) "Dreamgirls"-I couldn't agree more I agree 100% with villain 78's comments on Dreamgirls. I enjoyed the film, but other than Hudson and Murphy's performances, I did not think it was Oscar-worthy. It was nominated for what it deserved. I do have to give kudos to the Academy for nominating Borat for best adapted screenplay. It certainly isn't the typical Oscar nominee, but it certainly is original. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 23 2007 12:54 PM Dreamgirls No Nomination? What A Dream I'm so thankful Dreamgirls did not get nominated for Best Picture. I'm slightly dissapointed with no Brad Pitt (Babel) or Clint Mansell (The Fountain), but oh well. "Letters From Iwo Jima", "Babel", or "The Departed" are all deserving of winning. But even if "The Queen" (no chance) or "Little Miss Sunshine" win, I won't be incredibly angry. If Emmanuel Lebezki doesn't win cinematography for "Children of Men" it's a shame. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 12:55 PM Racist idiots! A lot of stupid white people here!!! Losers! P.S. Beyonce is still richer than you and a better person than you clowns! (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 01:30 PM In reply to this comment (#853748) Pathetic! Typical. A movie sucks but has blacks in it so to say it sucks makes us racist rather than right. It's people like you that prevent the race card from ever not being played in society. Get a life! I don't care if you're black, purple or green; People like you are a loser in any color! What, a movie has mainly black people in it so it has to win an Oscar otherwise the academy is racist? Did "Crash" not win last year? (back when the academy was a bunch of homophobes for not awarding the other film). I'd love to see "Letters From Iwo Jima" win, but I hated, hated "Dreamgirls." And I'm white. So, what, I love Asians but hate blacks? Damn my confused cracker-ass! Way to point out the amount of money she has as a reason to admire her. Just keep those sereotypes alive, brother. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 01:31 PM MONSTER HOUSE should win best animated film, but it won't. If anyone had any sense, TIDELAND would be up for a number of awards, including best picture. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 01:39 PM mostly a nice job with the noms- go little miss su Generally I like the picks. Glad to see Little Miss Sunshine instead of Dreamgirls like everyone else on this comment board. It had heart and laughts without being too cheesy or too predictable. Probably the most enjoyable movie of the year. I was hoping to see Pan's Labyrinth recognized as best picture, since I thought the visuals, the construction, the themes, the score and the story were beautiful. DeCaprio was great in the Departed, and ok in Blood Diamond, an odd choice for them to single out Blood Diamond. Damon was excellent in Departed as well. Mark Wallberg is good, but that role was not Oscar worthy. I also would have like to have seen a bit more attention for Children of Men, what a great film Overall a good year...The best picture doesn't seem to be so obvious as in years past. I predict Departed and Scorsese (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 23 2007 01:54 PM See I loved Dreamgirls because of its craft. It was well put together but a film has got to be more than just "well put together" to be a best picture. I'm glad it got the nominations it did and I'm happy it leads in terms of total nominations. It shows to prove that the Academy sees the craft that was put in. But best picture? The Departed and Babel are far better pictures than Dreamgirls. I do agree that it's ignorant to dismiss the film based on popularity. So you hate Beyonce. Put that aside. It's a very good film with a broadway score that deserves kudos. So it's no surprise that the academy awarded the most nominations to composer Henry Kreiger through the original song catergory. I'm slowly simmering about Brad Pitt getting snubbed for Babel though. And I'm one of the few who didn't find Borat funny. Loved Pan's Labyrinth and I'm hoping Peter O'Toole pulls an upset. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 01:56 PM In reply to this comment (#853748) Beyonce is so overhyped it is pathetic. Glad she did not get nominated. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 23 2007 02:06 PM I'm very surprised that Children of Men wasn't nominated for best picture. Little Miss Sunshine was entirely mediocre and I don't really understand why it was nominated. Also, Cuaron's exclusion in the best director category is rather perplexing. My vote would go to Babel and Inarritu, respectively, but Children of Men deserves a lot more recognition than this. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 02:08 PM I'm a little sad that some things got ignored (The Fountain for cinemtography and speical effects please!), but the Little Miss Sunshine love makes up for it. As far as the Dreamgirls scandle goes, I'm surprised that it wasn't nominated but I guess after really steller musicals like Moulin Rouge and Chicago getting nominated, Dreamgirls with it's strong voices, great ideas but less than impressive story telling just can't measure up. I'm happy for the Jennifer Hudson love though. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 02:28 PM where is leo in the departed? was he really that good in Blood diamond? i haven't seen it yet. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 02:41 PM i agree no nom for leo in teh departed? most importantly no nom for NICHOLSON or even DAMON but noms for Will Smith in "The Pursuit of Happyness" (Sony Pictures Releasing) Forest Whitaker in "The Last King of Scotland" (Fox Searchlight) Alan Arkin in "Little Miss Sunshine" (Fox Searchlight) WHAT THE FUC**** HELL?! (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 03:05 PM Click???? Poseidon????? What the hell is alli have to say about that....x-men should have taken both their places and the fountain got srewed to, along with catherine ohara...oh well at least dreamgirls didnt get a best picture nom (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 03:19 PM shut up about the fountain i guess if you're a movie that no one went to see and has no critical acclaim you probably shouldn't expect to get an Oscar nom. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 03:36 PM I praying for Letters From Iwo Jima to win. That movie was amazing. Ken Watanabe deserves an oscar nom. imo. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 23 2007 03:39 PM "THE DEPARTED" SHOULD WIN BEST PICTURE BUT IT WILL BE HARD TO BEAT "THE QUEEN" (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 04:13 PM not bad..... Im a little suprised with miss sunshine,an excellent film, but best pic? I do believe the fountain is way better than the critics would like us to believe, cinematography, score and costume design were deserved, and aronofsky made a film that should be looked back upon as unfairly maligned. I had a small hope that stranger than fiction would sneak a couple noms in as well, although I can imagine the reasoning behind its lack of recognition. Best laugh of the Noms? the fact that we can now say the words " Oscar nominated film " in conjunction with Click. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 04:27 PM Pan's Labyrinth is getiing some credit, but not enough. I tihnk it should've snagged a best picture nomination, as well as Children of Men. I have yet to see Letters From Iwo Jima, and I'm hoping to this weekend, but I am sick to no end of Eastwood winning Oscar after Oscar. They had better give it to Scorsese, the man who truly deserves it after all these years. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 23 2007 04:34 PM Damn! Am I the only one that feels so awfully dissapointed with the Animated Feature film nominations? Cars?! Happy Feet?! MONSTER HOUSE?! Are you kidding me?! What about "A Scanner Darkly" or "Renaissance"?! Worst, they said that the list will be with 5 nominess and they only picked up 3!!! what happened?! *sighs* well, at least Pan's labyrinth had the Foreign Language nod and, although I think that Babel was overhyped, I am glad that a mexican director is nominated (yup I am mexican). Still, my favorite list, the animated movies nominations, just plain sucks this year..but this year's animated movies sucked too :/ (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 04:37 PM Am I the only one that thinks that Jack Nicholson got robbed? Oh yeah, and the fact that Sasha Baron Cohen or Brad Pitt wasn't nominated shows the Oscars ignorance, and shouldn't Dicaprio have been nominated for The Departed and not Blood Diamond? Also Matt Damon has been left out. And don't get me wrong, I loved Little Miss Sunshine, but is it really deserving over United 93? (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 04:59 PM In reply to this comment (#853760) (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 05:02 PM In reply to this comment (#853763) "winning Oscar after Osacer"?!?! He's only won 2. And 12 years apart, nonethless. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 05:23 PM If nothing else, this years best picture noms sure as hell beats the crap out of last year's. Remember Brokeback? Unlike Crash, all of this year's nominations deserve to win. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 23 2007 06:50 PM Yeah I agree with the people who said Children of Men and Alfonso Cuaron should have gotten more credit, AMAZING film. Hopefully it will win all its nominated for. As for "The Fountain", the score by Mansell as well as cinematography and an awesome performance by Hugh Jackman should have been nominated. Click for makeup are you kidding?? Well lets hope for departed for best pic. And RT: pirates is nominated for 4 awards, and yes it deserves those awards its nominated for. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 23 2007 07:41 PM I think "Blood Diamond" asked more of Leo's acting abilities than "The Departed" did... "The Departed" is the better movie sure, but when you look at Leo's performance in it compared to every other role/character he has played in the past, it wasn't too much of a stretch for him to play. "Blood Diamond" is not his best performance either, but for this year, it was. He does a killer South African accent too. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 07:42 PM Pretty good nominations. Leo was nominated for Blood Diamond because Warner Bros. had hoped he would get nominated for best actor (for Blood Diamond, which happened) and best supporting actor (for The Departed, which didn't happen). I know, I don't think his character in the Departed is a supporting character either but that was their campaign plan. Also I agree that Mansell was snubbed; the score for The Fountain was fantastic. For me though the best movie of year was United 93-- at least Paul Greengrass was nominated for directing and the film won a nomination for editing. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 07:56 PM Though I haven't seen many of the films yet (I've been busy!), I have to say I think Little Miss Sunshine is over-rated and definitely not worthy of a best picture nomination. I found it clunky, the second half was extremely predictable, and I found it not to be "absolutely hilarious" as so many claim. It was an OK film buoyed by a good cast. Even when you read RT's critic reviews, there were many that gave positive though marginally so reviews. However, I was thinking Oscar for Arkin while watching the show. Why they knocked him off in the film remains a complete mystery to me. Children of Men, for example, was a far better film IMO. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 23 2007 08:01 PM In reply to this comment (#853745) I like where your head's at (picking Gosling...yet it's a longshot) (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 09:07 PM Im a little upset Children of Men didn't get best director or best picture. great movie. but overall, this year was pretty good. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 23 2007 10:04 PM Jennifer Hudson should not win, she was so bad in Dreamgirls yet people still think she should win, how about they nominate another actress that was actually good? Maybe Rasario Dawson in Clerks 2 the best comedy of the year? (Reply to this) |
on Jan 23 2007 11:53 PM I am so glad Little Miss Sunshine got the noms. I didn't understand why it wasn't being talked about in Oscarland when just about everyone loved it. Maybe it had a kinda happier ending and people just wrote it off.... But not Oscarland this year. Departed will win. Politics will be the reason. It may be the best picture and is deserving of it but I think that even if it wasn't.... it would win. The Tom Hanks rule. They won't give it to Clint again. Not the best pic anyhow. Martin has to get it this time. Babel.....The Queen....haven't seen so I don't know what I think is the best. Maybe Children of Men and LMSunshine (Reply to this) |
on Jan 24 2007 01:08 AM Well...for once its a good year for us Brits! Im general im happy with the nominatiosn thoguh i havent seen a lot of the films (babel only just out, waiting for fountain, letters, blood diamond ,dreamgirls etc) I really liked Little miss sunshine but would not pick it for best pic.... for most categories id be happy with anyone winning but i hope Scorcese does though i reckon Greengrass and not eastwood could steal it from him! and i am kinda pleased about beyonce but thats prob jealousy as shes rich, slim beautiful..... (Reply to this) |
on Jan 24 2007 01:30 AM figures I knew the Academy had lost it's mind when "Shakespeare in Love" won out over "Saving Private Ryan", so I suppose nominating Borat isn't much of a stretch. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 24 2007 07:03 AM In reply to this comment (#853728) Could they just give Scorcese the best director award. He deserves it maybe he didn't deserve for Gangs of New York but he did for the Aviator which wasn't his style at all and he did great with it. Also some of his older work should've won, I'm only 18 but I found some of his stuff in my video store its excellent and hard to imagine that he has never won a best director oscar. The Departed was excellent and deserves to win. I'm suprised Babel has been doing so well because it got sort of mixed reviews could it be this years Crash? (Reply to this) |
on Jan 24 2007 09:06 AM In reply to this comment (#853778) w@velength, I feel exactly the same. That year was the last year I watched the Oscars. In any case, I tend not to go to the movies that much, because I hate spending so much time on such disappointing fare. However, I do agree with what several others have posted. Namely, I think Little Miss Sunshine was outstanding and deserving of the nod. I just saw Children of Men and was amazed. What an excellent movie. Where I differ from a number of you is that Letters from Iwo Jima did nothing for me. I found the cinematography to be poor, the effects unconvincing, and the story lame. I wish I had that time back. (Reply to this) |

on Jan 24 2007 10:41 AM Not liking Beyonce's acting does not make me a rac Before I rant I must say that Little Miss Sunshine was a wonderful movie. I laughed my ass off and cried too. I am mad that Greg Kinnear was ignored, his face when he realized what the beauty pageant was like is a classic. I am angry that someone implied that my comment about being glad that Beyonce didn't get a nod was racist. I am black! I just don't like her crappy attitude because no one was amazed by her performance. Her parents are part of her problem, they have made her believe that she is entitled to everything just because she is Beyonce. I read that her parents demanded a re-editing to make her look better and her father's comments about "racism" because she didn't win a Golden Globe were unbelievable. Well they have to keep that gravy train running don't they, but they aren't doing her any favors. She, like other singers (Jessica, Hilary, Mariah, to name a few) need to stick to singing and not listen to their horribly over-developed egoes which tell them they can be actresses as well. I hope they don't have her singing the Oscar songs again, that was ridiculous!! Oh yeah, and Prince and Sheryl Crow got robbed in the song category. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 24 2007 10:50 AM this has to be Scorcese's year. i've seen all the other movies in best pic and best director catergories ,except for Letters from Iwo Jima, and i will say ALL of them are great movies with great directing efforts. but come on The Departed grossed more money and was in MY opinion the most entertaining movie in a few years....aka HUGE SUCCESSFUL MOVIE but hey thats what they said about Brokeback Mountain. Eastwood really doesn't need another trophey. how much room is left on that shelf? other than that....it seems silly to nominate films like Poseidon or Black Dahlia and leave out The Fountain. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 24 2007 11:14 AM expected a scanner darkly to get a visual effects nod, but glad it didn't. an improvement over last year, although i just don't see what the big deal is with Babel, hopefully won't turn into this year's Crash. would've been nice to see Alfonso Cuaron and Guillermo Del Toro get director noms ahead of Alejandro González Iñárritu and Paul Greengrass, but expecting too much with that. was Volver actually an entry from any country as foreign language film? some how i don't think so. No love at all for James Bond... feels wrong. (Reply to this) |

on Jan 24 2007 11:39 AM In reply to this comment (#853782) Well the ONE you haven't seen is the best of the bunch. I wouldn't worry, Marty will most likely win, but if we are going to judge truly based on the greatness of the actual craft of directing for these specific nominated films, not for career achievement, Eastwood deserves the award. However, I almost don't want him to win simply because the backlash that will come after will sour the whole thing. I say give director to Marty, but give best pic to "Letters." It really is of the bunch - by far. And don't disagree if you haven't seen it but just assume nothing is better than "The Departed" - a movie Marty could have directed in his sleep. He has deserved to win in the past and I'm all for him getting it - finally - but did he do anything all the new or special. Even his lesser films like "Casino" and "Gangs..." had more going on from a directing craft standpoint. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 24 2007 12:36 PM I agree with the many posters who have questioned DiCaprio's nomination for "Blood Diamond" over "The Departed." I thought he was phenomenal in "Departed," the best thing about the movie. Trapped in an impossible situation, his restrained but simmering tension was riveting, I thought, and when he was killed at the end I was really shocked and moved because I cared about his character. Anyway, I'd have voted for that performance to win (if they'd nominated it) - but I haven't seen Forest Whitaker's film yet. No one has mentioned "Notes on a Scandal" - what a great, brutal, devastating movie! I'm so glad both Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett were nominated; they were both brilliant. It was one of the harshest, truest movies about loneliness and obsession I've seen in a long time. In my opinion Dench should win over Helen Mirren - but I'm sure that won't happen. If you haven't seen "Notes" yet, you should. (Reply to this) |
on Jan 24 2007 01:39 PM Seriously, Little Miss Sunshine up for Motion Picture of the Year?? C'mon. Sure its a fairly good movie, but definitely not deserving of being called a top 5 movie of 2006. Sad to say, but this movie is more overhyped than Dreamgirls. (Reply to this) |

on Jan 24 2007 01:43 PM In reply to this comment (#853785) I'm appreciative of your comments about the films and Leo's performances, but please try refraining next time from revealing the fates of the characters in the films for those of us who haven't seen them yet. Its just not right. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 24 2007 01:55 PM In reply to this comment (#853787) I've seen everything nominated for Best Picture except Letters From Iwo Jima, and loved all for different reasons. I would like United 93 for Best Picture and Volver for Foriegn Language, but the nominations were for the most part perfect. I really want The Departed to win, but either Babel or maybe Little Miss Sunshine will win. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 24 2007 03:07 PM hmm... i have mixed feelings about these nominations... but i do every year. Scorsese ftw in best director though...the man deserves it. (Reply to this) |

on Jan 24 2007 04:07 PM Pan's was amazing. One of the most original movies in years, it unfolded like a novel instead of a Bazooka Joe comic thrown in with crappy gum. I say this because a great many movies are worse than gum comics. I'm happy that it got as many nominations as it did, and could only hope that this movie inspires more of its quality. I am already sure it will become a classic deserving of respect for the years to come. The question is whether more than a handful of people will know about it. One thing is for certain in my mind - had it been in English, it would have gotten top honors for many more categories. Sad, but true, of all the movies made all over the world, hardly any foreign films, and even fewer foreign language films, ever even get nominated for top honors. (Reply to this) |

on Jan 24 2007 04:37 PM My only complaint is the "actor in a leading role" category. Some great performances were overlooked. (Reply to this) |

on Jan 24 2007 07:52 PM I can't believe Children Of Men didn't get the Best Picture and Best Director nods. I seriously can't believe it! It's frustrating... By the way, I agree with whoever said that Greg Kinnear should've been nominated for best actor... (Reply to this) |

on Jan 24 2007 08:51 PM very happy with the noms my biggest surprise was to see how many nominations pan's labyrnth had. im soooo happy for that!!!!!! im pretty sure its gonna win for best foreign language film, and surely will get at least one oscar for technical achievements. im also happy for all the noms in babel, and i hope the movie gets at least one of the big awards! the departed its also a great movie, its wonderful to see that the academy awards actually paid attention to quality movies like this, and not the s**t that (wrongful) usually prizes, so i hope this movie also wins :) and what a great choice to leave behind beyonce and dreamgirls ...the girl thinks she is SO TALENTED AND BEAUTIFUL... duh... so sad... back to earth honey... (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 24 2007 10:10 PM The best visual effects... ...were definitively in Pan's Labyrinth. Pan's should in honesty sweep the bulk of awards, not be nominated for just a few lesser awards. (Reply to this) |

on Jan 25 2007 06:31 PM In reply to this comment (#853748) thank u I just want to sincerely thank you for ur comment. Beyonce CAN sing, she can act, she is a golden-globe nominee, she has charity organizations, she was the lead singer of the world's biggest selling female group, she has won 9 grammys, she has a grammy award-winning song with luther vandross, she has a clothing line, her hit song "irreplacable" is on its seventh week at number 1 on the billboard charts, she's the only singer that has ever performed at the oscars to sing more than 1 song on the same night and the list goes on. So for all u motherf**** racists out there who can't accept the power of a strong and successful bLack woman, you can all go to HELL. It's not her fault that you will never hav her achievements so you can change the channel the next time u see her on T.V. eventhough you will be doing that forever becos she's going to be on this bizness for a long, long, long, long time. U folks will never talk about ur white trash paris hilton, Britney spears and lindsay lohan but u will all join forces against a respectable, black woman.Pathetic, really pathetic. (Reply to this) |

on Jan 25 2007 06:41 PM In reply to this comment (#853794) back to earth well, she's back to earth; she's back to flying around the world, having platium albums, supporting her charities in america and south africa, being a rich black woman, enjoying "irreplaceable" seventh week at number 1 on the billboard charts, back wuth her family, back to her platium album, back to more movie roles, back to her loving fans, back to being a more respectable woman than all the white trash out there ( britney, paris, lindsay etc.), back to being the black woman white girls are soooo jealous of becos of her booty, back to being the southern girl who eats chicken and has wondeful CURVES, back to being the girl all white girls are jealous of because of her fine boooty, back to all the wealth, back with her 9 grammys, back to her london premieres, back to her loyal, international fans, back to her clothing line, back to her spirituality anD all that wealth. Wow! that dosent' seem like a bad earth to be back too HATER. (Reply to this) |

on Jan 26 2007 10:03 AM In reply to this comment (#853797) I haven't said a thing about her either way. But you sound very racist yourself going on how much better she is than all the white girls. Which actually makes you worse because your being a hypocrite on top of it. (Reply to this) |

on Jan 26 2007 04:47 PM In reply to this comment (#853797) You are truly pathetic... and a stupid racist; at least you could get a higher rolemodel... i mean... Beyonce... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA that just demonstrates you are a perfect idiot... ( and the only trash here is you, of course) Since when being so marketable is such a great achievement? she has many of the things she has because she appears everywhere she shows looking like a prostitute... BIG DEAL. Jennifer Hudson may be doesn´t have the looks Beyonce has, but she posseses pure, REAL talent. and talent is always gonna be better ( do you get it? i know its hard for you to use your brains, but try to make a little effort... it won't hurt you... too much) than physical - and thus, shallow- appearance; she is so much better than Beyonce... hehehe I know its hard to fall, especially if someone feels that is perfect, but it has to happen sometime; it hurts, but she has no choice, and, as i said, back to earth honey... (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 26 2007 06:45 PM What about OToole everyone is talking about how Martin Scorsese has never won and deserves it more than everyone else, which he does except for one person, PETER OTOOLE. he has given some of the greatest performances in movie history and been nominated 7 TIMES and never won, and i truly loved Whitaker in Scotland but they owe OToole this oscar for all the years they screwed up and never gave him the oscar, how didnt he win for Lawerence of Arabia he was brillant. on Jan 26 2007 08:27 PM In reply to this comment (#853799) hahahahhahahahah WOW! listen to yourself. Listen to how confused and distorted u sound. Next time you want to get in an argument know ur facts. It's not beyonce's fault that u have to be marketable to suceed. If it was only talent, then all the singers of church choirs will be stars by now. U made mention of jennifer hudson posessing real talent. So are u trying to say that beyonce cannot sing? Have you ever heard her sing live? I guess not. When she sang "Listen" on oprah live, she blew everyone away. She was given a standing ovation and even jennifer hudson had to stand. Did you hear her sing live at the oscars?i guess not.Because beyonce is beautiful u racists out there think that she does not have talent. Is it her fault that she is more beautiful than you guys?look at christina aguilera? she is beautiful, outrageous and markaetable.Does that mean that she does not hav talent? or is it becos she is white. Look at justin timberlake? he is also a marketable artist.Does that mean he doesn't hav talent? or is it because he is white. Wake up from your dreams,if u want to suceed in this business you have to be marketable.U also contradicted urself by trying to say that jennifer hudson is a real because she is not marketable. The producers of dreamgirls used her rejection on american idol as a means to create buzz about the movie; they kept talking about her big comeback after her rejecton on american idol. She traveled all over the world to talk about dreamgirls, she lost weight, she was on almost all magazine covers, she will star in a reality series about a group of hurricane katrina victims auditioning for a dreamgirls musical. The last time i checked, all the above are marketable strategies so i don't really know what you are trying to talk about o.k? being marketable is part of the business and even the most talented people do it to stay in the bizness. But yes, beyonce is beautiful so its very different right?I think people are hating on beyonce because of her beauty. They know they will never attain it and that's why they all started supporting jennifer hudson because they feel she is more like them. I love hudson but it is unfair to pick on somebody because she is beautiful. I'm done with this argument. Beyonce does not have to prove her worth to anybody. She has sold more than 60 million records worldwide, has sold-out concerts in south africa and Nigeria, won 9 grammys and has miliions and millions of fans all over the world ( esp. in Japan where she is household name) who truly appreciate her. Haters like you will always be around to eat the crums that fall from her table. The best thing about life is that everbody remembers the inventor but nobody remebers the nasty critics; SWEEEEEEEEEEEEET. (Reply to this) |

on Jan 26 2007 08:43 PM Volver and Jack How could Volver not be nominated for best foreign film? common academy, that's unfair. Why did they also snub Jack Nickolson? I was never a big fan of crime thrillers but Jack brought sexyback in the departed. To me, he gave the best performance in that movie. How on earth will they choose mark walhberg over Jack? mark was in what? like only three scenes in the movie. Some people are saying that Jck diddn't get nominated becos has been nominated 12 times. Well, it's not his fault that he is talented. If he deserves it, give it to him. (Reply to this) |

on Jan 28 2007 01:37 PM It's interesting that "Flags of Our Fathers" is nominated for the other categories but "Letters from Iwo Jima" got the nomination for Best Picture. Weren't they created by the same people? They probably should have released LFIJ for 2007. Maybe they should have placed LFIJ in the Best Foreign Language Film and FOOF in the Best Motion Picture category. "Apocalypto" didn't even make the nomination for Foreign Language Film. I suspect, it's another one of those "Passion of the Christ" kinda thing where they get disqualified because they don't quite fit any category. "Curse of the Golden Flower", surprisingly, didn't make it too. I have not seen "Little Miss Sunshine". Is this another "Sideways" or "Lost in Translation" kinda film (which i thought were over-rated)? Is it really better than "United 93", "Children of Men" or even "Dreamgirls"? And no nominations for James Bond?! (Reply to this) |

on Jan 28 2007 07:42 PM In reply to this comment (#853743) I totally agree I totally agree wit u iceghost.I was watching the SAG awards today and when little miss sunshine won i just said to myself "is this movie really better than Babel, dreamgirls, the departed and Bobby?" I am a big dreamgirl fan but ithought Babel was off the hook; it has a universal message for a generation torn apart by miscommunication. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jan 29 2007 05:32 PM i dont think babel can win, it is kinda of like crash kinda and after people losing it last year when that won i dont think they will take a chance again. and bobby wasnt very good at all. i think it will be between departed and iwo jima(sadly i did not think it was that great), but i love that sunshine was nom it was my favorite of 2006. but GO PETER O'TOOLE!!!!! he deserves this oscar because he deserved every last oscar he has been nominated for.
