Debating the Merits of The Reader
Oscar-worthy or revisionist whitewashing?
by Jeff Giles | February 13, 2009
Discuss Article

When you read the list of Best Picture nominations for this year's Academy Awards and saw The Reader nestled in between Slumdog Millionare and Milk, were you surprised? Well, you're in good company -- and for some, the response goes further than mere surprise: There's a small backlash movement brewing among writers who believe The Reader makes some questionable (to say the least) statements about the Holocaust, and this week, Slate's Ron Rosenbaum and the Huffington Post's Rod Lurie used their columns to make a case against the film.

In a piece titled "Don't Give an Oscar to The Reader," Rosenbaum leads off by calling The Reader "the worst Holocaust film ever made," and goes on from there to build a detailed three-page argument against giving it the highest honor the film industry has to offer -- and pauses to scrutinize what he deems similar offenses in Valkyrie. Read the whole article by following the link below.

Offering a similar opinion, Rod Lurie wrote a column titled "The Holocaust Revisionism of Hollywood," which he leads off by saying The Reader "gives ammunition to Holocaust negationists," goes on to reference Ron Rosenbaum's article, and from there proceeds to offer a point-by-point dismantling of the film's presentation of World War II history. It isn't as long as Rosenbaum's article, but it reaches the same conclusion -- The Reader doesn't deserve a Best Picture nomination.

Of course, you could find (or make) an argument against pretty much any nomination -- but in this case, the film in question has stirred up feelings that run deeper than simple dislike for a film. Check out both articles, and see what you think: Should The Reader have gone down as one of 2008's best movies?

No it shouldn't have. Not as one of the best five films of 2008, or one of the best 10 for that matter.

It's a more worthy Best Picture nominee that Benjamin Button is, that's where the uproar should be. Nothing more than an apology nomination for David Fincher for not nominating the 100 times superior Zodiac last year.

I think The Reader is one of the best movies of 2008. Kate Winslet is incredible in it.

Years fron mow, people will say "I wonder why "The Wrestler" or "The Dark Knight" weren't nominated for Best Picture while "The Reader" was?". "The Reader" is unlucky. Now it's getting more critism than it would if it wasn't nominated. All in all, you messed up Oscar voters, this is as big mistake as nominating "Chicago" is. (And letting it win.) But, everyone voices their opinion, if "The Dark Knight" or "The Wrestler" were nominated, someone would complain. Just, not as many would complain.

I love The Dark Knight, but it doesn't deserve Best Picture. The movie just has way to many flaws..

That's the reason "The Reader" was nominated. Marketing. Slight of hand bribery from The Weinstein Brothers.

See what I mean? Someone would've complained about any movie being nominated. By the way Sammy Jankis, I'm not saying you're wrong, you're entitled to your opinion, I'm just using you as an example.

These articles about The Reader being offensive to Jewish people and trying to make an excuse for the Holocaust is bull****. I am Jewish and The Reader is far and away one of the best films of the year, right next to Button and Slumdog, along with probably the BEST Holocaust film every made...yeah thats right i said it, its better than Schindler's List and The Pianist. And both of those films are fantastic. The reason it is better is because it not about a personal journey (a la Pianist or Life is Beautiful), nor is it broad ( a la Schindlers List) The film deals with Holocaust as an event, that is never depicted in the film. It is not biased in any way and lets YOU the audience decide if what Hannah did was acceptable or not. It doesn't give her any leway toward what she did, she is put on trial and imprisoned. As she says in the film, (im not supporting this) she says she was following orders, hence if she were literate she might have been smart enough to make her own decisions, which again isn't supposed to be deemed acceptable.

The key scene, and best scene in the film that sums up why the film is brilliant is where David Kross' character is in the classroom, and they are talking about motives of the Germans. The student says, "Why are we sitting around talking about this? When everyone found out about this, why didn't we all just kill ourselves" It didn't go exactly like that, but the kill ourselves line is the one im referring to. That line right there shows that the Holocaust was the most brutal event to ever happen, and there are no motives. It happened. It was horrific. That's it.

And to all you people that are bashing this film just because you didn't know what it is/was, shut the hell up and see it before judging it. kate winslet is one of the best actresses of our generation and deserves to win the oscar. I do think Wrestler and Dark Knight should have gotten some more nods.

I for one liked The Reader, it was a pretty good movie actually (8/10). Would I call it great, nope. I my personal favorite this year was The Wrestler, which only got as many nominations as Wanted. Also dont complain about the movie for it getting nominated if you have not seen it. Yes we all love TDK but stop complaining guys. Like seriously why do people still complain about TDK not being nominated?!? Its JUST the oscars, you love the movie and it doesn't need a gold statue to prove how good it is. So I don't really give a ***** that TDK wasn't nominated and I think people who complain are kind of... stupid. The oscars only cause movie back lash, more people tend to complain about movies getting nominated then celebrating ones that did, which is unfortunate. Its like I don't get why Benjamin Button gets so much hate, like cant you say you liked it and you think it at least is a technical achievemant and a visual wonder you can enjoy? I personally really liked it, and while I didn't love it like most Fincher films, I still think people give it too much hate. Remember guys its just the oscars and your favorite movies don't need a gold statue to prove there good and to prove your opinion is right. Your getting mad over spilt milk.

Why do people always get on TDK for having flaws, like having flaws is somehow uncommon in most films? Every film has flaws, no film is perfect. So why must TDK take the most heat for its flaws?

The point of a well made film is that, despite it's flaws, it can still do its job every single time you see it, because the sum of it all is much more important than the details of individual parts.

And, IMO, if TDK is too flawed to be considered "Best Picture material", then none of the films nominated this year deserve to be there either.

No "TDK" dosen't need a gold trophy to prove how good it is... no movie does, but when discussing the Oscars, I'll bring up their wrong doings. And yeah, I'm complaining. So am I stupid jokerboy? Huh, homeskillet?

The only good film on that list is Milk, which was great. Slumdog was too easy and fake, Button was too long and wandering, Frost/Nixon was bland (as is almost everything Ron Howard touches, save for Apollo 13), and while I liked The Reader more than those three, I actually was really perplexed by its nomination. The Oscars are a freaking joke anyway, so who cares? Remember when Crash won Best Pic? That was one of the worst movies that came out this entire decade, but the Academy chooses STATEMENT films. Milk will win Best Picture because of how important it tries to make itself feel. Same with Crash and the racism theme, Milk with the homosexual theme.

It's all a game of "fairness" too, which is why A Beautiful Mind (another one of the biggest POS of the decade) won Best Picture, since Howard was shafted with Apollo 13. Which is another reason that Milk will win, Van Sant was shafted with Good Will Hunting. Its bureaucratic bull****.

I'm really not even watching the Oscars, nor will I care who wins this year.

Josh J. that is the stupidest thing i ever heard. "The Reader" cant even be used in th esame sentence as "Schindler's List" or "The Pianist" unless it is being looked down on. Learn how to watch a movie.

sorry guys but you have to think that maybe the academy is honoring two of the greatest filmmakers of all time, Anthony Minghella and Sydney Pollack, who produced "The Reader." Pollack was even set to direct it before his unfortunate passing. I think that it is a good movie, which nobody can deny, and the nomination is a tribute to two of the best directors we've had because face it, you will never see their names on another movie poster.

Mark my words, the Best Picture Oscar will go to Slumdog Millionaire. Van Sant doesn't stand a chance.
