Cage Unleashes Crazy In Bad Lieutenant Trailer
Summary
Okay, for everyone lamenting Nicolas Cage's decade-long slide into talent-wasting, hairpiece-abusing blockbuster mediocrity -- this one's for you. Below is the production trailer for Werner Herzog's remake of Abel Ferrara's 1992 cult film -- this time called Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans -- with Cage taking on the corrupt, drug-taking cop role made infamous by Harvey Keitel. An aghast Ferrara had fired some unflattering words at Herzog and Cage a while back, but we have to admit, this looks kind of insane in a good way. Or maybe just totally awful -- it's hard to tell with Cage these days. Still, he does seem awake, Herzog's no slouch in wrangling lunatic performances (Kinski's the benchmark, after all); plus, there are lizards, Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer and... breakdancing souls. I cant believe Herzog directed this, even the look of the film seems bland. on May 27 2009 11:52 PM The trailer is kind of weird but I have a suspicion that it is the result of a studio that is not sure how to market the film. The music/mood in the trailer suggests it is supposed to be a comedy but the stuff happening on screen does not really match with the mood they are trying to set in the trailer. It looks more serious and the humor looks much darker, if it is indeed supposed to be funny even. I'm still convinced that Werner Herzog will make a movie that is at least interesting if not great. The mood of the trailer is "dark comedy", but the stuff being depicted is really sick and exploitative. I am also in disbelief that this is Werner Herzog's film....also, the title is super lame. on May 28 2009 06:07 PM This movie should be getting a lot more deserved credit. Herzog is one of the deepest directors working today. He truly knows how to make a movie beautiful whether it is a physical locale in Grzzly Man or a quiet dramatic moment with Christain Bale in Rescue Dawn. And as for Nic Cage, sure he makes trash like Ghost Rider and Bangkok Dangerous, but, for every Ghost Rider there is an Adaptation or Leaving Las Vegas. The Weather Man and Lord of War were his two best recent films and this film definitely has the same "extremely dark" comedy feel to it. Those films were great and this film will probably be even better with Herzog behind the camera. (Reply to this) |

on May 29 2009 07:35 PM Couldn't see the trailer cause it had been removed, but call me crazy nothing about the involvement of Nic Cage, Eva Mendez OR Val Kilmer excites me anymore. Val Kilmer got all creepy after the door and can't stop touching his own face for some reason, Cage's descent into the craptacular is well documented and I've never seen Mendes give a convincing performance with her clothes on. So, you're excited about a movie you haven't seen based solely on a weird incomprehensible trailer which everyone seems to be bending over to defend for some reason and have already come to the conclusion that you're going to smarter and have better taste than everyone else for liking it...Am I the only one who see's the flaw in logic here? Reminds me of the crap I heard spewed before A Thin Red Line came out. People were so invested beforehand and were bending over backwards to praise the bravery of only making one movie or so every decade that afterward they couldn't admit we didn't get an arresting account of the battle of Gaudal Canal, but a bloated star heavy nature film interspersed with Adrian Brody starring longingly into the camera for no apparent reason. And fine maybe I won't end up liking this film and the trailer has simply pumped me up for the experience a bit too much. But, if anything, becoming this excited has set me up,perhaps, more for a bit of dissapointment than bias me. Besides any movie that has Nic Cage spewing lines like:"What the f#@ing are these iguanas doing on my coffee table,""A man with out a gun, that's not a man,""I think she might be suffering from a little dimentia(after we see him cut off her oxygen supply)," can't be all that bad. I just don't agree with the thinking that says I've decided beforehand people are going to be stupid for not liking this movie, except me even though I don't have a reason. Yes, Herzog is directing, but all directors sans maybe Hitchcock have bad or disappointing movies. I see where you're coming from now. It just didn't come off the best in your first post.
