The CW Plotting Beverly Hills, 90210 Spinoff
Why aren't more people watching TV? It's an incredible mystery.
Okay, so maybe this isn't movie news, strictly speaking, but it's still good for a chuckle -- and what else are you really looking for on a Friday?
The Hollywood Reporter has shared the news that the CW, despite announcing plans to eliminate its comedy division this week, still has room on its schedule for comedy of the unintentional variety: according to an article published Thursday, the network "is developing a contemporary spinoff of Aaron Spelling's seminal 1990s teen soap Beverly Hills, 90210."
CBS Paramount Network TV, owners of 90210's parent company, Spelling TV, is producing the show without the input of 90210 creator Darren Star; instead, the spinoff is set to be written by Veronica Mars mastermind Rob Thomas. From the article:
A year ago, Endeavor-repped Thomas developed a spinoff of sorts from "Veronica" -- an alternative fourth season that would have found the title character studying at the FBI Academy. Despite a warm reception for his trailer at CW, the network ultimately canceled "Veronica," but CW chief Dawn Ostroff said at the time that she was looking to do another project with Thomas.
As the Reporter notes, "spinoffs are hot this development season"; the new 90210 will be part of a crop that includes the Family Guy spinoff Cleveland and what the Reporter describes as "a Prison Break offshoot set at a female prison."

donwillymo writes: on Mar 14 2008 06:32 AM God I used to watch this show. It sucks that they can't bring the original characters back although they should b/c they're not doing anything else post 90218. What's Jason Priestly doing as of late? Exactly! I'm straight by the way. Thank you (Reply to this) |

Gimy writes: on Mar 14 2008 06:37 AM is this a spinoff...or a remake? how the h3ll can you spin this off?? have the Peachpit somewhere in the show and thats the only returning character? yeah, my older sisters watched the show and loved it...thats about the only thing i remember besides Thiessen looking absolutely ridiculously hot and giving me this weird feeling in my pants. the most shocking thing about this story is...the CW had comedies?? seriously, if you can't thrive on a great show like Veronica Mars...your network sucks and you're doing something wrong. jimtrots writes: on Mar 14 2008 09:04 AM What a piece of mess this sounds like. And what makes me even more angry is that the CW cancelled an above average show like Veronica Mars to eventually find room for a 90210 spinoff. The CW doesn't have one acted show that is worth a damn, and I hope they go out of business. (Reply to this) |
