Consensus: Full of creepy campfire scares, mock-doc The Blair Witch Project keeps audiences in the dark about its titular villain -- thus proving that imagination can be as scary as anything onscreen.

It is an ingenious creation which makes effective use of its lack of budget and cast of unknowns. The film is composed entirely of reportedly "found" footage shot by three missing college students who made a journey to the woods of Western Maryland in 1994 with the purpose of making a documentary about a "witch" of local legend who is linked to murders and mysterious occurrences spanning 200 years. It begins with footage of the crew leaving their homes and testing their equipment, but before we know it, they are lost deep in the endless woods, with the voices of screaming children piercing the blackness from off in the distance. Things get worse from there. The experience is disorienting and frightening as well as the most rewarding horror film experience to come along in many years, as it wisely chooses to prey on our vulnerable imaginations rather than bombard us with graphic images. It is a horror film that shows nothing -- no blood, no violence -- explains nothing, and seems to mean nothing, but scares you and keeps scaring you long after it is over.

The actors never put a foot wrong; the video diary form allows no artifice, so that as terror mounts, the dread is infectious.

Rough around the edges and lacking a little in terror due to the endless parodies, but still worth a look.

A film which was to become a victim of its own hype, The Blair Witch Project still stands out as an innovative piece of film-making.

It's beautifully conceived, brilliantly constructed, and, like the villain herself, spellbinding.

"Blair Witch" should go down in history as proof that it doesn't take a big budget to make a great movie, in fact it may not even take a budget at all.

This is a highly original and well-made film which is one of the best of the year, and a welcome change from the recent slasher genre which most horror films seem to be classified as these days.

Heather's shaky video work can induce motion sickness -- it looks like combat footage as she bolts through the woods -- but just try turning away.

I could tell you the story -- give away every detail -- and The Blair Witch Project would still freeze your blood.

What gives the film much of its force and its mounting sense of queasy uncertainty is its narrative method, which ensures that we know no more about the proceedings than the characters do.

The three actors manage not only to capture some beautiful footage but also to spout believable and consistent dialog without digressing into the standard Scream pop culture references.
