And although this film wants to invite the invigorating spirit of a competitive female-oriented sporting fable, Blue Crush simply rides the waves in mediocrity while achieving no real sense of splashy excitement despite its scenic vibrancy.

Consensus: The surfing sequences are exhilarating, but the plot is pretty forgettable and trite.

Bosworth is Anne Marie, a determined surfer who shares a beachside shack with her best friends Eden (Michelle Rodriguez) and Lena (Sanoe Lake), and younger sister Penny (Mika Boorem). Just days away from the infamous Rip Masters surfing contest, Anne Marie's life is thrown into turmoil. After being fired from her housekeeping job at a luxury resort hotel, she is courted by the hunky NFL quarterback Matt Tollman (Matthew Davis). As she tries to contain the wild emotions that are threatening to overwhelm her, Anne Marie tries to come to terms with a surfing accident from her past that nearly killed her. In order to survive the contest's deadly, crushing waves, Anne Marie must reach deep within herself to find the courage necessary to come out on top. With BLUE CRUSH, director John Stockwell gives the audience what they want: bikinis, music, romance, and surfing. His picture is graced with David Hennings' gorgeous photography, which captures the beauty and the excitement of the immensely popular sport. [More]

Reviews for Blue Crush
Much credit must be given to the water-camera operating team of Don King, Sonny Miller, and Michael Stewart. Their work is fantastic.
It cuts to the core of what it actually means to face your fears, to be a girl in a world of boys, to be a boy truly in love with a girl, and to ride the big metaphorical wave that is life -- wherever it takes you.
Rarely has a sport been captured on film with such daring originality and nailbiting tension.
The energy caught on the water kept making me tense my legs as if I was going to fall off my surfboard at any moment.
Blue Crush has all the trappings of an energetic, extreme-sports adventure, but ends up more of a creaky "Pretty Woman" retread, with the emphasis on self-empowering schmaltz and big-wave surfing that gives pic its title an afterthought.
Isn't terribly original, but it does have the refreshing virtue of showing people smacked around by tsunami-sized waves that, for a change, are mostly not computer generated.
There are girlfriends, day jobs and bad dates in the way, but what it's really about is the waves.
Blue Crush follows the formula, but throws in too many conflicts to keep the story compelling.
Blue Crush is one of those tough-to-sell late-summer flicks made for marketing impossible dreams and fashion. But its main failure is the way it undermines its heroine's drive and strength.
The presence of Bosworth and the terrific surfing scenes and amazing camera footage make the film worth checking out, especially if you love surfing or just watching Mother Nature's oceanic 'special effects' at work.
