How does the Tomatometer work Help Icon

Average Rating:5.5/10

Consensus: Critics say Bounce is more of a thud. Plot turns feel cliched and contrived, and the romance between Paltrow and Affleck fails to engage.

Runtime: 1 hr 46 mins

Genre: Dramas

Synopsis: When Buddy Amaral (Ben Affleck) decides to have a casual fling with a woman he meets in an airport, he gives up his ticket to Greg Janello (Tony Goldwyn), an earnest man on standby for the flight... When Buddy Amaral (Ben Affleck) decides to have a casual fling with a woman he meets in an airport, he gives up his ticket to Greg Janello (Tony Goldwyn), an earnest man on standby for the flight who is desperate to get home to his wife and child. But when the plane crashes because of snowy conditions, killing everyone on board, Buddy plunges into a sea of despair and confusion. At the edge of a nervous breakdown, Buddy seeks out Abby Janello (Gwyneth Paltrow), Greg's widow. He approaches Abby, who works as a real estate agent, under the pretense of finding a new location for his advertising agency. But, he never reveals that he knows about her husband's death. While his only intention is to do a good deed for the grieving Abby, Buddy slowly finds himself falling in love with her and she responds to him with a similar sincerity. The only thing keeping them apart is the dark secret that Buddy is hiding. BOUNCE is writer-director Don Roos's follow-up to his engaging, clever, independent debut, THE OPPOSITE OF SEX. Like that film, BOUNCE examplifies Roos's knack for writing witty dialogue and using it to make a intelligent, sweet films. [More]

The liveliest, loveliest drama of personal and romantic redemption since Jerry Maguire.

Much of the success of Bounce can be attributed to Paltrow, playing a woman who is incredibly appealing and incredibly unaware of her appeal.

Roos combines a sharp script with excellent performances and comfortably lived-in sets to produce a cornucopia of poignantly human interludes.

Just when you think this won't turn out to be a typical moron movie comes a sore-thumb courtroom scene/ reconciliation that ruins it all.

The sort of romance that doesn't come around too often—intelligent without being saccharine, heartfelt without being condescending.

A star-driven vehicle that puts its money down on its two leads, who do not disappoint.

The movie never really works because it's hard to root for a screen romance when one of the actors is stiff and unsympathetic.

As a director, [Roos] brings a keen eye for character and nuance to his writer-side's lapses.

By letting star power and commercial considerations warp good storytelling judgment, Roos has shortchanged his own movie, not to mention the audience.

Aided by two very strong performances from Ben Affleck and Gwyneth Paltrow and filled with a number of really well written scenes by Roos.

A commendably restrained, mostly intelligent drama providing a good showcase for its two personable young stars.

So assiduously unsentimental that it comes off as cold and anemic -- and flat.
