How does the Tomatometer work Help Icon

Reviews Counted:106

Average Rating:5.5/10

Consensus: Critics say Bounce is more of a thud. Plot turns feel cliched and contrived, and the romance between Paltrow and Affleck fails to engage.

Runtime: 1 hr 46 mins

Genre: Dramas

Synopsis: When Buddy Amaral (Ben Affleck) decides to have a casual fling with a woman he meets in an airport, he gives up his ticket to Greg Janello (Tony Goldwyn), an earnest man on standby for the flight... When Buddy Amaral (Ben Affleck) decides to have a casual fling with a woman he meets in an airport, he gives up his ticket to Greg Janello (Tony Goldwyn), an earnest man on standby for the flight who is desperate to get home to his wife and child. But when the plane crashes because of snowy conditions, killing everyone on board, Buddy plunges into a sea of despair and confusion. At the edge of a nervous breakdown, Buddy seeks out Abby Janello (Gwyneth Paltrow), Greg's widow. He approaches Abby, who works as a real estate agent, under the pretense of finding a new location for his advertising agency. But, he never reveals that he knows about her husband's death. While his only intention is to do a good deed for the grieving Abby, Buddy slowly finds himself falling in love with her and she responds to him with a similar sincerity. The only thing keeping them apart is the dark secret that Buddy is hiding. BOUNCE is writer-director Don Roos's follow-up to his engaging, clever, independent debut, THE OPPOSITE OF SEX. Like that film, BOUNCE examplifies Roos's knack for writing witty dialogue and using it to make a intelligent, sweet films. [More]

There's no way out of the excruciating melodrama, and the film withers in its trap.

I wanted [Buddy and Abby] to become lovers, which means they sold me on themselves.

So sloppy with sentimental goop, unsuspecting audiences should be warned not to sit too close to the screen.

Buddy and Abby's awkward friendship and eventual love affair are pleasant enough but never particularly engaging.

A mopey romantic contrivance, with a touch of strained comedy, that maybe is slightly better than last year's Random Hearts but still tedious.

The script by Don Roos, who also directed, makes good use of the dramatic irony.

It's deflated by its earnestness.

This pandering film tries to squeeze every drop of bittersweet emotion from the audience.

More a specialist in sarcasm than in melodrama, Roos fails to scare up a decent complete exchange between anybody.
