[Moore's] better at fingering problems than finding solutions. But though he only scratches the surface, at least he provides a strong itch to explore more.

Filmmaker and leftist activist Michael Moore asks some serious questions as he probes the depths of America's trigger-happy gun culture in the insightful and amusing documentary, BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE. Guns in America are used to kill an average of more than 11,000 people per year. This death toll is obscenely out of balance with other first world countries, which generally average a total in double digits. Experts and analysts have pointed to America's bloody history as a reason, but how does that explain the lower murder rate in Germany? Violent entertainment has also been fingered, but how does this account for staggeringly low numbers in Japan, home of the most violent entertainment video games on the market. Moore's trademark comedic tone is razor-sharp as his quest leads him everywhere from Littleton Colorado's Columbine High School to the home of NRA President Charlton Heston. Moore, oddly enough a lifetime NRA member, makes his main target the news media, but also fires away at inefficient welfare programs, Dick Clark, and Kmart. The latter is even compelled to make a major policy change in their stores due to one of Moore's confrontational stunts. This exploration into America's obsession with guns is disarmingly humorous, but Moore also asks challenging questions and fearlessly seeks responsible parties, making the film an effective call for more social awareness as well. Reviews for Bowling for Columbine
There is simply no doubt that this film asks the right questions at the right time in the history of our country.
At its best, which occurs often, Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine rekindles the muckraking, soul-searching spirit of the 'Are we a sick society?' journalism of the 1960s.
There are some inconsistencies in Moore's points and his arguments jump around a lot to support his view of the world (like any good documentary), but it's still very thought provoking.
Even those who would like to dismiss the film outright should find much to mull and debate.
Where Bowling for Columbine is at its most valuable is in its examination of America's culture of fear as a root cause of gun violence.
With 'Bowling for Columbine,' Michael Moore gives us the perfect starting point for a national conversation about guns, violence, and fear.
We need [Moore's] noisy, cocky energy, his passion and class consciousness; we need his shticks, we need his stones.
Mr. Moore aims at so many targets and tilts at so many windmills that his arguments lose persuasion.
Moore provides an invaluable service by sparking debate and encouraging thought. Better still, he does all of this, and more, while remaining one of the most savagely hilarious social critics this side of Jonathan Swift.
This disquieting, comic brand of guerrilla filmmaking is two hours of subjective preaching that should be required viewing.
Moore's bag of tricks is familiar from Roger & Me -- smirking, oozing false sympathy, insinuating, fiddling with facts -- and it works best the first time you see it.
Stuffed to the brim with ideas, American instigator Michael Moore’s film is a rambling examination of American gun culture that uses his usual modus operandi of crucifixion through juxtaposition.
Even if the world doesn't see things the way [Michael Moore] does, his questions are worth asking.… and Bowling for Columbine benefits from his iconoclastic zeal.
This movie has intelligence and a thirst for the truth, and even if it doesn't find simple answers, it does its job by asking the questions.
Whether you agree with his politics or not ... you will leave the theater thinking and arguing about it.
Number one - with a bullet. The Last Temptation of Charleton. All politics aside, this is a fantastically made film.
Even Moore's detractors, should they be inclined to see the film, will admit that he takes a refreshingly nuanced view of the issue.
