Consensus: Though there was controversy over the choice of casting, Zellweger's Bridget Jones is a sympathetic, likable, funny character, giving this romantic comedy a lot of charm.

In the screen adaptation of BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY, Helen Fielding's international best-selling phenomenon, documentary filmmaker (and real-life inspiration for the character Shazzer) Sharon Maguire has managed a rare feat--a film as captivating as the novel. Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger) is a pretty and neurotic thirtysomething "singleton" (in her vernacular) who vows to take control of her life after being humiliated by handsome, standoffish barrister, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at her parents' New Year's party. Determined to lose weight, and cut back on vices like wine, cigarettes, and workaholic-alcoholic-misogynistic men, Bridget begins a diary to chart her progress. Unfortunately, the P.R. executive hits a snag when her boss, gorgeous cad Daniel (Hugh Grant) instigates a sexy e-mail flirtation. Despite her tendency to bungle book launch parties, and any situation involving the ever-present, ever-disapproving Mark Darcy, Bridget's winning combination of charm, vulnerability, and wit intrigues not only the seductively dangerous Daniel, but also the arrogant barrister. Featuring a note-perfect performance by Zellweger, a devilishly against-type one by Grant, and the inspired casting of Firth (the object of Bridget's lusty fantasies in the book); DIARY is a clever, delightful romantic comedy guaranteed to please old fans and win new ones. Reviews for Bridget Jones' Diary
Zellweger, a walking ray of sunshine, makes Bridget eminently likable, yet it's more than a little frustrating to watch an intelligent, attractive woman continually tear herself down...
Funny, heartwarming, and possessing the unique ability to make you cringe with empathetic horror.
Firth exudes a Ralph Fiennes-like smoldering charisma, taking a role that Fiennes himself would probably never stoop to accept.
Zellwegger uses a limitless reserve of humility and vulnerability to capture hearts. She's stunningly sympathetic.
Bridget Jones’s Diary belongs to Bridget. It belongs to Renée Zellweger.
...never fully comes to comedic life, seldom reaches out emotionally, and provides few new insights into the perils of love and dating.
It's pretty funny to watch as every family member she runs into asks when she's going to settle down, but there is really little difference between them and the host of older characters in Austen's novel who constantly scheme and plot marriage connections
A hugely enjoyable film which will appeal to broken-hearted cynics and hopeless romantics alike.
Una de las propuestas más frescas, ingeniosas y encantadoras en mucho, mucho tiempo
...a thoroughly enjoyable piece of work that everyone (yes, everyone) will admire.
...the best date flick to come down the pike in an awfully long time...
Thanks to terrific performances and a willingness to mix romantic moments with ones of mortifying hilarity, this film rises far above its competition to become the year's first truly romantic comedy hit.
I'm a fan of the book so I eagerly anticipated the film regardless of hesitations about the star - I am delighted with the result.
The film tries to position itself as a comic anthem for unshackled single-womanhood, but it's aimed at the bland middle.
