Consensus: Woody Allen's hard-working, uphill-climbing Broadway talent agent is rendered memorably with equal parts absurdity and affection.

Danny is a no-luck Broadway talent agent with a heart of gold who shepherds his flock of dead-end performers with a sense of compassion and loyalty that borders on lunacy. The few sad-sack clients of his who managed to garner some modicum of success ended up dropping Rose like a hot potato. Then along comes full-bodied Lou Canova, a throwback crooner with golden tonsils. Danny realizes that Lou has the ability to go somewhere, given the current nostalgia craze, and he coddles the big guy hoping that he'll be his ticket out of palookaville. Rose eventually finagles a gig at the Waldorf; with Milton Berle in the audience scouting talent for his new television special, this could be Canova's big night. But Lou's troubled love life throws a shroud over the entire evening. The married singer has a girlfriend with mob connections, and after an argument with Canova she refuses to go to the show. Lou starts drinking again and in the midst of a mawkish emotional tirade threatens to cancel the performance if she doesn't show up. Danny must somehow infiltrate a Mob wedding and get the blonde moll to the Waldorf on time; if he fails, his last, best hope for success will go down the drain. [More]

Another Allen gem. Full Review |

Warm, funny and steeped in affectionate characterizations -- this is Allen at his most sprightly. Full Review |

The jokes are firmly embedded in plot and characterisation, and the film, shot by Gordon Willis in harsh black-and-white, looks terrific; but what makes it work so well is the unsentimental warmth pervading every frame. Full Review |

It's a lovable Woody at the top of his game. Full Review |

Woody Allen attends to his neglected lovability factor in this tiny, anecdotal comedy. Full Review |

Although the film contains many of the great verbal jokes that are Allen's forte, the visual wit and the sentimental drama fall a bit short. Full Review |

Allen's perfect as a small-time, good-hearted Broadway talent agent, giving his all for a roster of hopeless clients. Full Review |

Like Hannah and Her Sisters it strikes a perfect balance between structure, pathos, and sheer laughs. Full Review |

A paean to the loveable losers in show biz who give it all they've got but still cup up short. Full Review |

A modest but often side-splitting effort from the neurotic comic.
