Trailer(s) Bulletin: Burn After Reading, Zack and Miri Make a Porno
They both look great in red!
by Jeff Giles | May 30, 2008
Blog Article | Discuss Article
It's Friday, gang! What do you say we pull up our chairs in front of a pair of red band trailers as we bid the work week adieu?

First up is the debut teaser from Zack and Miri Make a Porno, the Kevin Smith comedy with the self-explanatory title. Opening October 31, Porno follows the adventures of a pair of friends, played by Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks, whose decision to, well, make a porno has unintended consequences.

The teaser doesn't give much away, but there's some vintage Smith dialogue in there, so if you're 18 or over, follow the link below for your first glimpse of Zack and Miri in action!

Also hitting theaters in the fall -- and now debuting a crimson-hued trailer -- is the Coen brothers' Burn After Reading, a dark comedy about two gym employees (Brad Pitt and Frances McDormand) who stumble across a CD containing government secrets lost by a CIA agent (John Malkovich). Naturally, blackmail (and Clooney) follow, and...well, take a look for yourself -- the trailer is available for free download via iTunes. See that link down there? Click on it!

Wow! I must admit, after learning who was going to be in Burn After Reading (Pitt? Clooney AGAIN?), I feared this was going to be another Intolerable Cruelty. No! It looks great, and Pitt looks hilarious.

Oh, and might I add...more hilarious hair from the Coens. Pitt's frosted tips, baby!

I see anything directed by the Coens. This looks like it may be the closest thing to a comedy they've done. More comedy than Fargo.

The dialogue in Zack and Miri may have been funny, if I haven't seen all the Kevin Smith, Jud Apatow films that carry the same exact dialogue. I didn't like Clerks 2 at all, I'll probably not like Zack and Miri. (Although I did write to Kevin Smith a while ago begging him to have the one element in Clerks 2 that I liked, The P**** Troll, in Zack and Miri.)

What about Raising Arizona? I'd call that one the closest thing the Coens have made to comedy...because it is one.

That being said, I like the looks of both of these.

zack and miri will prolly be good, but this trailer is nothing special. like REALLY nothing special.

'burn after reading' looks fantastic. don't even try to front on that cast. i think the bros will continue to hone their craft and top a catalog that has some real classics in it. 'the big lebowski' gets even better every time you watch it and 'fargo's a frickin masterpiece. this looks like a bit of a combo of the two...

The Coen's have done many many comedies. Raising Arizona, The Hudsucker Proxy, The Big Lebowski, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Intolerable Cruelty, and The Ladykillers. Burn After Reading will certainly not be their first comedy.

Both look amazing, I was going to see burn after reading anyways because of the cast but now it looks awesome and Porno looks really funny, I am now on its band wagon.

Kevin Smith directing Seth Rogen, and a Coen Bros. dark comedy with Brad Pitt as a total buffoon.

I could cry right now out of sheer happiness.

Can Seth Rogen make Kevin Smith's written dialog seem like a real conversation for once? Just messing with you Smith (we all know he trolls the message boards). I like this match-up. How fitting is is that these two hooked-up at the end of 40 year-old virgin (we assume) and now they are starring together? I'm a big Clerks fan, and his other movies have had some great moments, but hopefully Smith pulls the reigns in a little. It would be really easy for this to go way over the top (as in donkey shows that go way too long). Hey, hows about the correlation between Seth Rogan's opening speech about donkey shows in 40 year virgin and Clerks 2. I think Smith has found a match made in Heaven.

I feel like an idiot about the coens-comedy comment. :(

Although, I thought Hudsucker Proxy was unoriginal, and Sam Raimi also worked on it.

LadyKillers was unbelievably awful. I pretend the Coens had nothing to do with it. In fact, I had the whole film repressed in my memory until I saw it again.

But Raising Arizona was certainly a comedy, and a good one. Big Lebowski was so great it's in an entire category all by itself.

I looked up the cast, and was hoping John Goodman and John Turturro would be in this film, but they aren't listed.

John Goodman's role in Barton Fink is one of the most inspired acting jobs I've ever seen. Especially "I am the life of the mind! I am the life of the mind! . . .heil hitler."

Burn after reading looks especially good. Loved O brother, where art thou?.
The Kevin Smith doesn't look that good, sadly. His movies are usually really good(I even liked jersey girl), but unless these are the really bad parts of the movie and not the best, it looks disappointing.

Burn after reading looks awesome, amazing cast.

Sorry to be redundant with the comments here already, but that's about all that needs to be said after seeing it - let's hope the whole movie is as awesome as the trailer.

Both look like they have the potential to be amazingly epic. Can't wait to see them both. People stop hating Kevin Smith for Jersey Girl and get over it. Clerks II made up for that mistake and you guys know it!

For some reason, I'd add The Man Who Wasn't There to that list of Coen dark comedies. Ditto that for Barton Fink. Maybe those films being so enjoyable just made them feel like comedies. Hmm..

Burn After Reading looks great! Easily on of the funniest trailers I have seen in a while. Every movie the Coens have done has been amazing (I have yet to see the Lady Killers and Intolerable Cruelty though) and this one seems to be keeping with their track record. As for Kevin Smith and Zack and Miri....I'm not sure yet. I'm a big Kevin Smith fan (never sorry Jersey Girl) and Seth Rogan is the shiznat so my hopes are high....but the preview wasn't so great. I'm not really sure its an actual preview though...it seems like its a total ad lib, early promotional preview. Seems kinda thrown together. Still, looking forward to them both, especially Burn After Reading,

Zack & Miri will be a solid addition to Rogen's work, and Burn After Reading will be one of the best comedies in one of the best years for comedy.

I mean, just look at this list: Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express, Hancock, Step Brothers, Hamlet 2, Burn After Reading, Zack & Miri... and there are probably more yet to come that we aren't yet aware of.

(let's pretend that Meet the Spartans and Disaster Movie don't exist)

"I feel like the Hudsucker Proxy was unoriginal"

Yeah, because I've watched so many period pieces dealing with the invention of the hula hoop. That movie is the most underrated film the Coen brothers ever made. I think the humor is too subtle for most people.
