Cannes 2008: Review - Changeling
Clint Eastwood's latest: a masterpeice in storytelling.
by Joe Utichi | May 20, 2008
Blog Article | Discuss Article
In recent times, prospective Oscar candidates releasing their wares in the same year as a good Clint Eastwood movie might as well abandon hopes of nabbing the statuette. After seeing the grizzled helmer's latest - Changeling - (or The Exchange as the Cannes production notes confused journalists with) -- we're inclined to believe this year may well be no exception. Indeed, Eastwood cheekily even includes a moment of reverence for the ceremony within.

Set in Los Angeles in the late twenties, Angelina Jolie is Christine Collins, mother to a nine year-old lad Walter who goes missing from his home one weekend. Distraught, she naturally turns to the LAPD. Five months later they call and tell her that they've found her son.

But when she goes to collect him, she claims she's never met the boy before and his doctors and teachers confirm that the child she's been given is not Walter. With a corrupt police force refusing to reopen the case she turns to church minister Reverend Briegleb (John Malkovich) and resolves to keep looking.

Based on a true story, the film follows the case to its bitter end and Eastwood -- true to form - has no qualms about spending two and a half hours doing so. Yet a masterfully crafted narrative pace, and a simply revaltory stunning central performance from Jolie's guarantees total investment in the material.

The Exchange

As one of the world's most celebrated beauties, Jolie brings baggage to the screen by virtue of her celebrity that initially threatens to intrude on her portrayal of a suburban single mother. But she very quickly shrugs it off with confidence and questions about her believability in the role soon dissipate. It's no wonder; Christine is just the sort of strong, independent woman the actress loves playing, whether she's tackling independent drama or blockbusting action.

Eastwood projects a luscious-looking and fully realized version of LA in the twenties that's in turns glamorous and grim, but the film's greatest success is in its attempt to capture the climate of the period. The complex politics of the corruption rife within the LAPD in the period are very quickly established and woven into the story with no overwrought attempt to impose modern judgements on the characters actions.

Critics in Cannes will likely get straight to work questioning the director's politics, and there's no doubt that Eastwood chooses subject matter that engages him on more than just a superficial level. Whatever you think of the man's political views however, there'll be no question of Eastwood's talents as a master storyteller.

Eastwood's recent run of form continues with Changeling, which seems certain to be - at the very least - amongst the favourites come Oscar season.

a) Why did they change the title? I liked The Changeling better.
b) Who cares about his politics? This is absurd. Do they come up in the film? If not, why did you even bring them up? Everyone knows Eastwood is a "real" Republican and not some crazy Neo-con. He's even taken Gov. Schwarzenegger to task over environmental issues here in California.

Also, the title is spelled wrong in your headline.

More Eastwood a** kissing...Letters From Iwo Jima is the only good movie he's ever directed. Not overwrought? that must be a typo by Joe...

though I can understand and respectfully disagree with those who are not Eastwood fans, assuming Letters From Iwo Jima being the only good film he's directed is blatantly ignorant, and almost certainly coming from someone who has seen very little of his filmography.

Clint Eastwood is one of the few directors you can expect genuine quality from every time. Hit and miss is not a phrase he's familiar with. He's getting on in years, and I do wonder how long it'll be before dies, but I'll be glad to continue shelling out to see his great movies until that day.

Clint Eastwood is once of the best actor and director around.

Even De Niro and Pacino (who are doing nothing but **** lately) pale in front of him.

and he is really a better director then ppl only 2/3rd of his age.

Clint Eastwood can easily be put on the same level as Spielberg.

I'm as shocked as anyone, but Eastwood has somehow managed to become one great film maker, and one who seems at the top of his game. Letters from Iwo Jima was the most effective anti-war film I've ever seen, and is a near masterpiece. Mystic River, The Unforgiven, and Million Dollar Baby are all superb films. It's too bad he didn't start directing much earlier. I hope we can see more from him. I'm definitely looking forward to the Exchange.

I do think the name change is good - the Changeling sounded a bit like a horror movie.

The Changeling was a 1980 horror film. It was pretty good. . .

The main annoyance I had with Mystic River was that I thought Kevin Bacon out acted everyone. . . but no nod to the baconater.

Eastwood started directing in the early 70s. How much earlier do you want? Rawhide?

sfsilver--

Eastwood has actually been directing for decades, and has directed dozens of films, he's only just now becoming widely recognized as a director. (although, long before he was getting oscars, Orson Welles called him "the most underrated director alive.")

I don't think Baby Jesus likes Clint Eastwood at all no no no way because he killed that nice boxing lady and you arent supposed to do nothing like that and also he chews tobacco and that is bad for your gums and makes them bleed so I think we should all watch movies by Brent Ratner over and over again because Baby Jesus loves him a lot more than you or me or clint eastwood. You are supposed to press next and then you see there are 10 for spielberg.

How amusing for those of us following Eastwood's career since the 1970's & who recognized even then (with the likes of The Outlaw Josey Wales) that this was a major American filmmaker. Nice to finally see people catching up. In fact Eastwood is still, if anything, underrated. He has an amazing variety of movies to his name & many little known gems amongst them. Two from the 80's - Bird & White Hunter, Black Heart, are particular favorites of mine. I highly recommend them to anyone interested.

Eastwood is the man. Even his overrated films are awesome like Mystic River. This guy barely makes a mistake these days and is the best understated director of our time. His films even got better after Mystic, where I thought Mystic was overstaged and too clean cut, even for a Boston movie.

Million Dollar Baby and Letters for Iwo Jima stepped it up and drew down the epicness of his pictures and made them more personal. These movies are classics. Keep digging them out Eastwood.
