Trailer Bulletin: Carlito's Way: Rise to Power
by Scott Weinberg | August 19, 2005
Discuss Article
There's a "Carlito's Way" prequel on the way, and you can check out the trailer for the movie right here.

"Carlito's Way: Rise to Power" stars Jay Hernandez in the title role, and his supporting cast includes guys like Luis Guzman, Mario Van Peebles, Giancarlo Esposito, and Sean Combs.

Not surprisingly, the direct-to-video prequel focuses on a Carlito Brigante who's a bit younger than the Al Pacino character we know and love, and the movie will deal with Brigante's "rise to power" in the mean streets of New York.

Adapted by the novels by Edwin Torres and written / directed by original "Carlito" producer Michael Scott Bregman, "Rise to Power" hits video shelves on September 27th.

at least they didn't spit in our faces by releasing it in theatres, i almost could've thought about taking that trailer seriously if p. diddy wasn't in it.

Wait, so it didn't make sense for Pacino to play his younger self, but it's fine for Luis Guzman as Pochanga?

It looks alright for a straight to DVD sequel, to one of the greatest gangster films ever made. I'll probably check it out, though the lead actor looks pretty lame.

They've been showing trailers for this in the the theaters out here, and it looks like a bad TV Movie.

Coming to a DVD nearer you...
That shouldn't even be a question in these times. Direct video is the new theater. Has been for some time for major studios (as far as animation is concerned). Prepare for the onslaught.

What I'm surprised about is how little advertising these things get (with the exception of Sandlot 2, which raked in a ton of dough. Co-een-kee-deenk??).

new theater, my @$$!
If a movie is deemed to be worth its chops, it will always get a theatrical release. At least for the next 30-50 years. To say that dvd is more relevant or more important is ludicrous. Here's a quick example: Most people don't even know that there was two 'war of the worlds' remakes released this year. Why no noise on the second one? Because it was a direct to video P.O.S.!!!!!

30-50 years? Try 10-20.
Hollywood doesn't agree with you. Many of the upper eschlon are vying to grab a hold of that market and glut it with all they can (as if that hasn't already happened to theaters, so don't bother making that point). Marvel is unleashing a plethora of their characters to direct video. Bobby Iger made news about releasing major films simultaneously in theaters and DVD (an idea that was obvious, half a decade back, to any film fan worth his salt). Hollywood cares about its first week sales, and what better way to nab such earnings than through the word-of-mouth-proof, digital-pirate-evading method of direct video. Even the general discussion here is split on their preferences between home viewing and theatrical fare.

Your prejudice to the market isn't telling at all. It's old hat. In ten to twenty years, theaters will be halved, at best, and will only host the major blockbusters and classic film revivals.
