Friday Box Office: "Cars" Raced to $19.3M Finish
Pixar's new animated feature "Cars" finished first on Friday with an estimated $19.3M, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com. Although not as well-reviewed as previous Pixar productions, this opening day gross is on par with the $20M debuts of their previous two features, "The Incredibles" and "Finding Nemo." Both of those films went on to finish their respective weekend with about $70M, which is probably the same number "Cars" will do when the weekend's over.
Featuring the voices of Paul Newman and Owen Wilson, "Cars" tells the tale of a hotshot race car who gets sidetracked in a small town, and learns a thing or two about friendship and humility in the process.

wilkiedriver writes: on Jun 10 2006 11:36 PM What's with the 78% on the Tomatometer? I just saw this movie and I thought it was better than Toy Story 1&2, and almost(I said almost) as good as Finding Nemo. Without sounding pig-headed, did the subject matter (cars) put off some people because they don't care for cars, which would be most females? (Reply to this) |

Pixar made a string of great films so the expectations are really high for each of their upcoming films. "Cars" is still a very good movie, just not as good as "The Incredibles" or "Finding Nemo." I think it all started with the underwhelming teaser. Still, "Cars" is the best reviewed CG animated feature since "The Incredibles" (not counting foreign features). I think this is Pixar's best looking film too. (Reply to this) |

loner_xtreme writes: on Jun 11 2006 03:08 AM well it's not just females it was a great movie indeed. but i wouldn't consider this better than any other pixar film. i would rank this as my least fave of pixar. both toy stories had a certain trait that caught both kids and adults' eyes. it explored something many people hardly ever thought about...the life of inanimate objects. something everyone played with when they were little. and story to it...replacement of new toys...choosing between the old life or being featured as an expo. yada yada.. a bug's life was fairly simple...but the character designs were just superb in its own way. i think it also helped that there were many different characters for people to choose from. plus...it dealt with an environment we all overlook. monsters inc. reminds us of the monsters in our closet...which everyone thought about. the idea of their own world and how pixar interpreted it was just perfect. each character were special as well...especially BOO. finding nemo took a simple search story and took it into a whole new world...the ocean...a place where many people don't know about. characters could be related to real people as well... the incredibles had a style so eyecatching about it. CARICATURE. and of course...the story. so why is cars the least fave? it's basically some things that it lacks above all other pixar movies...THE STORY. it was fairly predictable at times. the characters didn't help much. yes the designs were great...certain traits about a car that could relate to the real world. but the characters' themselves were a bit bland...nothing really special about them. cars is just....cars with eyeballs. very little character design to it. this movie seemed to attract more adults that kids...because it involved adult characters and an adult-like setting. every other pixar movie had at least one kid-like quality to it (toys, bugs, monsters..BOO, superheroes, father and son fish..darla). i'm just pointing my opinions from an art student's POV. we're taught to be anal about these kinds of things...lol. though i do agree that this is the most beautiful 3D i've ever seen..especially the backgrounds! Audience analysis shows women tending to like the Pixar films better than men with the expection of the Incredibles. (Reply to this) |

South_park300 writes: on Jun 11 2006 01:30 PM i still think it's better than A Bug's Life. It's probably better than Monster's Inc(although i really love that movie) It's hard to say whether I like it better than the Toy Stories, Finding Nemo, and Incredibles. Although I think they are just as good. Midway through the movie, I forgot they were cars. they were just characters. A Bug's Life may be my least fave Pixar flick, but Pixar has NEVER made a bad movie. (Reply to this) |
