Advance Word from the Alamo: "Ratatouille" Rocks

A recent AICN-sponsored "Ratatouille" screening at Austin's Alamo Drafthouse sent one happy viewer directly to the internet...

You know how I feel about reading "advance word," but there is one spoiler-free passage that made me feel pretty good about Pixar's newest flick:

Cool. I can't be the only one who thought "Cars" was pretty weak.

Pixar (for the most part, a few movies excluded) has come up with amazingly novel ideas for movies. Thank god when they were bought by Disney, the Pixar team remained in tact and wasn't Disneyfied.

I havent seen Shrek 3, but I feel like that franchise is getting a little stale - how many of these "hip," "cool," and "edgy" animated movies can we take? Although I will admit that when I saw Shrek 2, I wasn't expecting much, and was pleasantly surprised by it, so who knows.

Shrek never had potential to be a franchise. I actually didn't like Shrek 2 that much, still think it's overrated. I've never anticipated sequels much other than predetermined sequels like Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, etc., but I'm really looking forward to Pixar's Toy Story 3. With Michael Arndt (writer of Little Miss Sunshine) penning the script for it, I don't know what else to do besides anticipate it.

Ratatouille looks amazing. I'll be there on the first day.

I heard a while ago that Disney doesn't expect grand-scale success from this film, but dangit, I think it looks great! Heck, anything is better than Cars!

"shrek never had potential to be a franchise". one of the dumbest comments i've read in awhile. first off, it IS a franchise dillhole...there's two more movies on the way. second, its a SUCCESSFUL franchise. thats like a knicks fan saying...yeah...that michael jordan was a crappy overrated basketball player...suuuuure

i'm actually not sold on this movie now because of the last few trailers i've seen. they were actually bad. when i'm bored after 3 minutes...you did a crap job of marketing. i'll still take my son but...i'm not that confident its going to the classic everybody's saying it'll be. 60+ million dollar opening i'm betting though...

Really? Really??? That's a bit harsh don't you think? I'll stack Cars next to any other non-Pixar animated feature in the past few years and it's still pretty damn strong. The only problem with Cars is it had to measure against it's Pixar brethren.

I can't wait for Ratatouille - Brad Bird is a true storyteller. This would probably be great even if it was performed by puppets.

The thing I love about Pixar is that they are not money whores like their parent company Disney and Dreamworks. If Pixar ran things like Dreamworks, there would be The Incredibles 2, Finding Nemo 3, Monster Inc. 2, and Toy Story 6 by now, and only the original would be worth a crap. They don't care that if they make a sequel if they make the money off of it, they want a quality screenplay. Plus Pixar doesn't have to worry about money, since If they put their name on it, its automatically got 300 Mil attached to it.

now that Disney owns pixar, that might happen (monsters 2, incredibles 2, toy story 6). When they split Disney was gonna go ahead and do sequels for toy story, monsters and the incredibles i think, now Pixar is gonna do them which is good, but Disny has been inflexible about the existence of the sequels for years... Im still very happy that Pixar is going to do whatever sequels they actually do, instead of Disney aninamtion....

Yeah, Cars was pretty weak, the only dip so far in Pixar's history of extremely good movies...and all I have to say for Ratatouille is this: I smell an Oscar-winner. I'll be there the first day, as well. :)

While this may sound like the logical step, John Lassater (sp) is actually the head of Disney Animation now, which pretty much lets Pixar make what they want to make. Considering the fact that we've just found out about Pixar's next three films, and only one is a sequel, says a whole lot about Disney and Pixar's future. Sequels should only exist if they warrant it, and I feel that Pixar knows that story trumps any large sums of money they could get in return, because a great story will get people into theatres. I wish studios knew that...

First of all, Cars was by no means "weak." It was a very solid film with Pixar's usual flair for dialog and humor. Second, say what you will about it, but Pixar tried something with Cars NO ONE else was doing and succeeded. It may have appealed to a niche crowd, but I applaud Pixar for taking such a bold risk and not make yet another talking zoo animals or penguins movie.

Shouldn't surprise me though, as the general audience will say they want something original, yet they'll continue to spend truck-loads of money on the same old spoon-fed mediocrity (enter Dreamworks) that continues to inundate movie theaters weekend after weekend. Hypocrisy reigns.

Cars was a strong animated movie. I loved it. Only against other Pixar movies did t look bad. I did like Happy Feet a little more, but both were great. Anyway, I'm happy about Rataouille. It looks like a really fun and entertaining time.

One of the Cars reviews on this site summed up the movie perfectly: "Pixar has likely made the best animated movie of 2006 and even then, it's a disappointment." Cars wasn't Pixar's best, but it was still one of the best animated movies I'd seen in a while. I eagerly await Ratatouille and Wall-E.
