007 Writers to Tackle "Barbarella"
by Scott Weinberg | April 13, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Seems like we've been hearing about a "Barbarella" remake for quite a while now, but there finally seems to be some serious progress on the project: "Casino Royale" writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade have been hired to pen the screenplay for producer Dino de Laurentiis.

The producer signed a deal with the estate of author Jean-Claude Forest, so in addition to a new-fangled and ultra-modernized "Barbarella" adventure, we'll also be offered new reprints of the original French comic book series. Apparently the producers are shooting for something slick and high-tech; not the campy loopiness of Roger Vadim's original film. (Then again, "Barbarella" was kinda high-tech for the late '60s.)

Apparently the British writing team will deliver "a free, modern gal who survives in a futuristic world through her intelligence, fighting skills and sexuality." Hey, that sounds pretty great and all, but I bet that's what producers had in mind when they made "Aeon Flux" and "Ultraviolet." And we all know how those ones turned out.

No word yet on who'll be playing the title role, but I'm betting it won't be Jane Fonda again.

yeah but... this being penned by the guys behind "Casino Royale" gives it a huge advantage, wouldn't you think?

Good point, but Purvis & Wade also wrote "Die Another Day," which is so bad it makes "Moonraker" look like "Goldfinger." :)

What made Casino Royal great was Martin Campbell's direction, who's only other Bond film was "Goldeneye", which was the last good Bond film before "Royale". The script for Casino Royale was not impressive at all--and after looking at these two screenwriters list of credentials I can see why. They really ought to get Tony Gilroy to write the next Bond film, not these two hacks.

I know this article is about "Barbarella", which I gurantee will suck anyway, so I dont care if I ventured off the subject.

A Barbarella that's not campy? You might as well try to make a non-campy version of Godzillla vs. Megalon.

As far as I'm concerned, there are only two ways this remake could work. Give it to Robert Rodriguez, or give it to Roland Emmerich. Possibly Joss Whedon is a third way, but I'm not sure what that would look like.

Give me a campy Barbarella or none at all.

Actually, Die Another Day was the best of the Brosnon flicks. Next to that one, i'd have to say Tomorrow Never Dies. Anyway, i'll give ya Aeon Flux, but, no matter how many critics and people hated on it, Ulrtraviolet was loads of fun.

The original always seemed to me like a sci-fi Krull with a smaller budget...that's right, it looked cheaper than Krull. Take that for what you will.

Problem is they won't remake that scene in which Jane Fonda is Strapped to the Music Machine in which she is forced to Orgasm and is supposed to die from pleasure but she is too much woman and overpowers the machine, Truthfully Barbarella is a soft core to get your rocks off for that one scene. Once you get a GF, (Like Me) You'll toss it away like a used condom. Here's a stupid idea, its based on a comic....How about doing one of her adventures from the comic. And what was really that great about the chacter other that she slept with half the known galaxy and eventually got pregant. That's it.
