Consensus: A great concept, but the movie fails to develop the characters and some of the jokes are hit-or-miss.

In the outrageous comedy CATS & DOGS, Professor Brody (Jeff Goldblum) is on the verge of discovering a chemical formula that would give humans immunity to dog allergies, making dogs the clear favorite of humans over cats, their age-old enemies. When a power-mad white Persian cat named Mr. Tinkles (voiced by Sean Hayes) decides to kidnap the professor and his family and attempt to reverse the formula, making all humans allergic to dogs, canine operative Butch (voiced by Alec Baldwin) and young, hapless recruit Lou (voiced by Tobey Maguire) must stop Mr. Tinkles's nefarious plans. Blending live action with realistic puppetry and seamless computer animation, CATS & DOGS reveals an amusingly secretive world of talking felines and canines where cats parachute out of stealth planes in night-vision goggles and dogs operate hi-tech computer equipment. And in one of the film's most stunning sequences, a Russian mercenary kitten attacks the Brody household with an arsenal of weapons including plastic explosives and bladed boomerangs. Entertaining for both children and adults, the film also features Elizabeth Perkins and the vocal talents of Susan Sarandon, Jon Lovitz, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Joe Pantoliano. [More]

A gross insult to any human being with the intelligence of a pound mutt.

A tale so monumentally silly that the only recourse is to sit back and laugh.

The critters eventually outstay their welcome because there is not nearly enough plot to warrant all the effects.

In spite of its anti-cat sins and lame-o people, the action sequences are still clever enough to make it worth your while.

There is some mild language and lots of animal slapstick -- à la Wile E. Coyote vs. Roadrunner -- that may be a little much for small children. But most kids will find the action fun and the animals hilarious.

Not exactly high-concept, but it is silly enough to be amusing.

Even at a Chihuahua-sized 83 minutes, the movie begins to feel funny in the same way that having the neighbor's dog attach himself to your leg is funny. You laugh while you're wishing you could pull yourself away.

Though its furry cast members are sometimes cute, the movie systematically converts Babe's tender, talking-animals appeal into just another soulless gadget-fest.

Getting past the blatant canine bias ... the movie turns out to be an inventive all-ages comedy.

Whoever created the theatrical trailer should be applauded (or disdained) for doing such a great job in making a bad movie look good.

I couldn't be cattier - "Cats & Dogs" should be relegated to the pooper scooper.

Cats & Dogs has none of the intriguing charm of the Babe films -- it fails to establish animal characters we can care about. With few exceptions, the pets are nothing more than furry pawns.

Cats & Dogs needed to have more gags and punchlines than Dr. Dolittle. Unfortunately, all it has is a great concept.

Except for a fine slapstick chase sequence before the opening credits, every good joke in the movie is to be found in those trailers.

So advanced are the special effects techniques that the filmmakers even combine animated faces with real animal bodies, with such uncanny skill that after awhile you give up trying to find the seams.
