Charlie Wilson's War is the true story of how a playboy congressman, a renegade CIA agent and a beautiful Houston socialite joined forces to lead the largest and most successful covert operation in history. Their efforts contributed to the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, with consequences that reverberate throughout the world today. Oscar® winners Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman team with Academy Award®-winning director Mike Nichols and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin to bring George Crile's best-selling book to the screen.
Charlie Wilson (Hanks) was a bachelor congressman from Texas who had a habit of showing up in hot tubs with strippers and cocaine. His "Good Time Charlie" exterior, however, masked an extraordinary mind, a deep sense of patriotism and a passion for the underdog, and in the early 1980s the underdog was Afghanistan--which had just been brutally invaded by the Russians.
Charlie's longtime friend and patron and sometime lover was Joanne Herring (Roberts), one of the wealthiest women in Texas and a virulent anti-communist. Believing the American response to the Russian invasion was anemic at best, she prods Charlie into doing more for the Mujahideen (Afghan freedom fighters).
Charlie's partner in this uphill endeavor is CIA Agent Gust Avrakotos (Hoffman), a blue-collar operative in a company of Ivy League blue bloods. Together, the three of them--Charlie, Joanne and Gust--travel the world to form unlikely alliances among the Pakistanis, Israelis, Egyptians, arms dealers, law makers and a belly dancer.
Their success was remarkable. Funding for covert operations against the Soviets went from $5 million to $1 billion annually. The Red Army retreated out of Afghanistan. When asked how a group of peasants was able to deliver such a decisive blow to the army of a superpower, Pakistani President Mohammad Zia ul-Haq responded simply, "Charlie did it."--© Universal Pictures

Reviews for Charlie Wilson's War
A great starting five of film artists %u2014 director Mike Nichols, writer Adam Sorkin and actors Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Phillip Seymour Hoffman %u2014 have put their distinctive spin on the story
Nichols and Sorkin have made a Cadillac of a movie, a handsome, beautifully designed chassis with a powerful motor and luxurious attention to detail.
The emphasis on this war is personalized, and what Charlie Wilson learns from it could change the world now.
It's too easy a movie not to like it, as a diversion rather than a serious work of art, perhaps.
Without Philip Seymour Hoffman's Gust, this would be a mildly amusing 2-star dramedy. His deadpan punchlines elevate it beyond well-intentioned shlock
Nichols and Sorkin take the easy way out, promoting the personal tale of the roguish Wilson, rather than establishing a real socio-political context within which something insightful might have emerged
a slick, smart, and subversive look at where America went wrong with its geo-political thinking
A quartet of Oscar-winners got together for Charlie Wilson's War and while the result is a decent film, it's not a spectacular collaboration.
as good as this movie is, I get the sense that Charlie Wilson himself has some better stories to tell.
What a treat! Charlie Wilson's War is the perfect Christmas present for thinking moviegoers.
You won't likely be blown away by the film, and it's not as hard-hitting as it probably ought to be. Still, it's a solid picture with enough good elements to sell it.
Hanks brings down the USSR superpower solo, on his down time between snuggling with herds of babes in the buff, snorting coke, and full time boozing. File this one under the Pink Elephants section.
Maybe it wasn't his fault those chickens came home to roost in the form of the Taliban, but you have to wonder: Would Nichols have given Oliver North such an easy ride?
CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR presents the same Hollywood left broken record; the same song and dance; so why spend money to hear the same liberal mantra?
You may find better films that deal with the precursors of our present blowback in the Middle East, but you won't find many more entertaining.
