An often-hilarious political satire that tells a story so bizarre and unlikely that it comes as no surprise to discover that most of it is indeed true

Charlie Wilson's War is the true story of how a playboy congressman, a renegade CIA agent and a beautiful Houston socialite joined forces to lead the largest and most successful covert operation in history. Their efforts contributed to the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, with consequences that reverberate throughout the world today. OscarŽ winners Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman team with Academy AwardŽ-winning director Mike Nichols and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin to bring George Crile's best-selling book to the screen.
Charlie Wilson (Hanks) was a bachelor congressman from Texas who had a habit of showing up in hot tubs with strippers and cocaine. His "Good Time Charlie" exterior, however, masked an extraordinary mind, a deep sense of patriotism and a passion for the underdog, and in the early 1980s the underdog was Afghanistan--which had just been brutally invaded by the Russians.
Charlie's longtime friend and patron and sometime lover was Joanne Herring (Roberts), one of the wealthiest women in Texas and a virulent anti-communist. Believing the American response to the Russian invasion was anemic at best, she prods Charlie into doing more for the Mujahideen (Afghan freedom fighters).
Charlie's partner in this uphill endeavor is CIA Agent Gust Avrakotos (Hoffman), a blue-collar operative in a company of Ivy League blue bloods. Together, the three of them--Charlie, Joanne and Gust--travel the world to form unlikely alliances among the Pakistanis, Israelis, Egyptians, arms dealers, law makers and a belly dancer.
Their success was remarkable. Funding for covert operations against the Soviets went from $5 million to $1 billion annually. The Red Army retreated out of Afghanistan. When asked how a group of peasants was able to deliver such a decisive blow to the army of a superpower, Pakistani President Mohammad Zia ul-Haq responded simply, "Charlie did it."--© Universal Pictures

Reviews for Charlie Wilson's War
Under Mike Nichols's direction Hanks, Roberts and Hoffman have a great time with Sorkin's dialogue, even if these aren't the sorts of parts that win Oscars.
Charlie Wilson's War is an anachronism, the wrong movie at the wrong time. Not only does it tell its tale in a style that feels dated and artificial, the story itself focuses on events that history has overtaken.
When dealing with larger-than-life personalities, world conflicts, and a future of unspeakable misery, 90 minutes and some sugared patter just doesn't satisfy.
Sounds like a spy movie but it's handled as a comedy, and while the whole thing is droll (there's more than a few funny exchanges in the film), it also feels weightless.
The weight of current events in Iraq and Afghanistan push at the back of your mind as you watch the film.
A lean and tight insider's look at the absurdity, deceit, and artifice of politics.
Only Hoffman manages to make a silk purse out of this sow's ear... by blustering through his line readings with a raw energy the rest of the film sorely lacks.
While the film is of a serious nature, it plays as a comedy and turns out to be well-crafted entertainment.
Eighty percent of Charlie Wilson's War is a dizzyingly satiric and outrageous -- and true -- story.
Like grafting the conflict-free pizzazz of Ocean's Thirteen onto Lions for Lambs.
[It's]a satire of the second Cold War and clueless American politics, while also celebrating the comparatively loose morals and naiveté of the greed decade.
A mostly amusing film that features smart performances and even-smarter dialogue.
...serves up U.S. foreign policy like a champagne cocktail - a whole lot of bubbly followed by a dash of bitters.
Sorkin's fast, smart talk perfectly captures the smart, self-aware characters who like to pretend they can hide how much they care.
Nichols's cut, gutted version (of Aaron Sorkin's script) offers a few cheery, breezy moments of rat-a-tat comedy, but Charlie Wilson's War stops being funny when you realize we're living in the sequel.
A forgettable and too-glossy piffle posing ridiculously as Oscar bait, Charlie Wilson's War tells a true story that warrants more respect than this lifeless, frivolous drudge of a final product.
