"Superman" Reigns at The Saturn Awards
by Scott Weinberg | May 14, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns" cleaned house at the Saturn Awards over the weekend. (Hey, don't laugh. The Saturn Awards have been around for over 30 years and they pay some fine attention to the genre films we all love so much.)

Check out these winners and then tell me the Saturn folks don't have pretty good taste:

They also gave out some TV awards, which you can check out at Sci-Fi.com. (There's also a full list of nominees so you can see which flicks got beat up by Superman.) I think they might be just a bit too much drooling over "Superman Returns," but hey, I'm not on the voting committee.

wow... i really liked Returns, but i don't think it was that good. Totally agree with the children of men win though. Best actor though? Bradon will definitely be better in the next film as he grows into the role more. he was great in this one, but i don't think he was best actor worthy. But hey, good for him, he's making a crap load of money and i'm in grad school making $19k a year. Who is leading the more exciting life?

WTF!
Superman Returns suxed. And the actor won best actor? He was one of the biggest down falls for the movie. Gets some more awards up there fro Children of Men, Clive Owens a much better actor than the Superman guy. WTF!

A sad sack of choices, made for a lackluster award show. I do have to say, for entertainment value (and why else do we go to the movies), Pirates and X-Men were much better than Superman and Children of Men. Superman relied on the fact it USED to be good (first two installments) and Children went for the intelligent sci-fi angle (though the first 1/3 of the film was boring). These award shows frustrate me, even the less mainstream ones.

That's...interesting. Really? Best Actor? I guess they couldn't give EVERYTHING to Children of Men.

Best Music: John Ottman ("Superman Returns")
Um? What? The best parts of the soundtrack where written by someone else, and Ottman added in some filler. They give you an award for tht now?

I worked for the post office for over 29 years and the only award I received was a 25 dollar gift card to Wal-mart. Why does everyone in Hollywood think they deserve an award for just doing their job? It really doesn't make sense to me.

WTF indeed...WTF is suxed and fro, Captain Spell Check? And ease-up on that s key. Brandon Routh did an outstanding job in "Superman Returns." He had the difficult task of playing an established character. People with a hell of a lot more credibility than you have agree with me. I agree that "Children of Men" is a great movie [better than "Superman Returns"] but that fact, nor the fact that Clive Owen [not Owens] is a damn good actor, should serve as a discredit to Routh.

whatever happened to .....
.... Science of Sleep. I don't recall seing it on any Best Of lists or award shows last year. :( Guess no one really saw it and/or liked it. I thought it was the most original and romantic (in a deeply depressing but realistic way) movie of 2006.

well, honestly, it was the "best" fantasy film of the year. I mean, what else? I loved lady in the water but it wasn't that great, and Eragon?..yeah right!

I don't agree about Brandon routh. His acting was very mediocre.

Yay for Pan's labyrinth and children of men though :D

I thought Superman Returns was an excellent movie and Brandon Routh did great. I also thought that the John Ottman score was brilliant. Yes, John Williams composed a lot of it but the newer stuff that Ottman did sounded awesome. Congradulations to Superman Returns, Bryan Singer and the rest for a job well done. 2009 can't come fast enough. Bryan, remember, you don't have to pull a Sam Raimi and have a crap load of villians just to try and outdo yourself for your sequel. It hurt Spiderman 3 in the reviews and I know you won't make the same mistake. Oh, Spiderman 3 will make some money but who cares, it's not all that great. If you stick to the formula that you always use, Superman Returns sequel will be the best super hero flick of all time. Hands Down!

Wow... The Descent won best horror movie? The pickings must have been terrible this year.

Nice to see Slither pick up something...heck, THAT should have been best horror movie! (Kidding....maybe...)

I need to see Returns again. I remember thinking it wasn't bad; not great, but not how people have been regarding it either. As to whether it should have garnered all those awards? I guess it depends on what it was running against.

Children of Men is a sweet movie.

Pan's is too.

I liked Superman Returns well enough, but not nearly as much as Batman Begins and I'd never assume that The Dark Night will be the best super hero flick of all time "Hands Down!" Those who make such assumptions are simply setting themselves up for dissapointment. Even though I have little doubt that The Dark Knight will be far better than any Superman film that Singer can pull out of his ass.

Overall I'm happy for Children of Men. I think it deserved more though.
