[Law and Kidman] share a fatal lack of chemistry together, and it's a flaw this grandly ambitious movie cannot overcome.

Far more than a simple love story, Minghella's film captures the horrors of war for both those fighting it, and for those left behind. Based on the Charles Frazier novel, this is a tale of hope, longing, redemption, second chances, and faith. Ada Monroe (Nicole Kidman) is a proper lady who accompanies her preacher father (Donald Sutherland) to Cold Mountain, North Carolina. She waits for her love, W.P. Inman (Jude Law)--a sensitive man with little use for many words--to return from war. In the process she learns basic survival skills and finds strength from no-nonsense Ruby (Renée Zellweger), a spitfire who can work the land as well as any man. Meanwhile, wounded Inman has had enough of war and killing, and is slowly working his way back to Ada despite the perils of being a Confederate deserter. Law and Kidman are genuinely touching as two virtual strangers who invest all of their faith in each other, and Zellweger is astounding as the uncultured but compassionate Ruby. Rounding out the cast is an impressive array of actors, including Brendan Gleeson, Ray Winstone, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman, Jack White (of the White Stripes), Kathy Baker, Giovanni Ribisi, and many others. Reviews for Cold Mountain
Rises and falls on the strength of its individual sections and, just as crucially, on the judgment of the actors who populate each.
A stunning, if utterly gut-wrenching and heart-breaking Civil War drama.
A towering achievement of style over substance, glorious to look at and powerful to experience.
The dazzle doesn't add up to the sustained act of brilliance I'd been expecting. For all its many strengths, the picture ultimately feels like a mild -- and I emphasize mild -- disappointment.
Not that there aren't award-worthy performances here, there are. And not that it isn't good, it is. It's just not THAT good.
Like Frazier, Minghella has artfully wrangled what is essentially a series of allegorical episodes into an emotional experience of cumulative impact.
A Civil War melodrama that never really has the emotional heft -- the oomph, if you will -- that audiences will expect.
So rich with detail that each viewer will discover a scene and a character worth cherishing.
[Minghella] once again has achieved the miracle of transforming a difficult book with an inner narrative into a deeply satisfying film.
Remains compelling even at over two-and-a-half hours thanks to great performances from Law, Zellweger and the collection of cameo appearances from the likes of Giovanni Ribisi and Hoffman.
It evokes a backwater of the Civil War with rare beauty, and lights up with an assortment of colorful supporting characters.
Minghella, in his long-winded tales of love, has the storytelling prowess of a narcoleptic Ulysses teacher
One of the most intelligent and caring book-to-screen transitions ever made.
Powerful but somehow distant, like a story being told in low tones across a room.
Minghella tries too hard here, carefully placing every element but stupidly forgetting to include any feeling.
...has a level of artistry and heart that I would normally not give Mr. Minghella credit for...a little too long and still feels like something is missing...
An updated version of a romance story. Passion is tempered with practicality, but it exists nonetheless. Women are as pro-active in construction as men are in destruction.
the statuesque Kidman and the diminutive Zellweger make a wonderful team
