High-Res Images: Rose McGowan as Red Sonja
It's just like being at Comic-Con...
by Jen Yamato | July 25, 2008
Discuss Article

Can't quite picture Rose McGowan as the flame-haired barbarian swordswoman Red Sonja? We've got the first look at the sexy teaser poster and character art unveiled yesterday at Comic-Con! Images after the jump.

When Robert Rodriguez and Rose McGowan abandoned plans to remake Jane Fonda's space vehicle Barbarella, they merely turned their attentions to another redhead vixen: Red Sonja. While 1985's film adaptation starring Brigitte Nielsen played (and bombed) as a chick version of Conan the Barbarian, the 2009 version to be produced by Rodriguez with McGowan in the title role is shaping up to be much closer to the Red Sonja seen in comics, more specifically as published in the past several years by Dynamite Entertainment. Take a look and see for yourself!

Red Sonja

Red Sonja

The official synopsis, courtesy of Nu Image/Millenium Films:

In her return we find Red Sonja, a young girl risen from the ashes of tragedy to become the most feared woman warrior of all time. The mythical red-head blindly seeks vengeance on those who destroyed her family. In her path of destruction she discovers a larger purpose for her unearthly powers: to save all Hyrkania from the villainous Kulan Gath.

Red Sonja is slated for 2009 and will be directed by Douglas Aarniokoski (Highlander: Endgame).

Holy lord I cannot wait. I hope Rose and Rodriguez become the next Uma and Tarantino. They work with one another so well. This ought to be an interesting outing. But, hey, anyone know if they're going to make Machete? I'm also dying to know if Eli Roth is ever going to make "Thanksgiving."

Hmmmm... well this does seem about as stupid an idea as the Barbarella remake... so maybe this one will get canceled too because Rose simply can't act. Anyone remember "Scream"? She got killed by a garage door opener... some how I can't picture there was too much acting involved there.

Is it too much to ask for an action heroine who looks like she might occasionally hit the gym?

You said it, Bruce.

But cabezone, I gotta tell ya buddy, I'm no big Rose McGowan fan myself but ah... she doesn't look like she "might occasionally hit the gym"?

unfortunately, it is too much ask cabezone. Still, I do believe

Rose McGowan could beat me up pretty badly, so that's enough for me ;)

I shall watch this. I may turn the volume to mute, but I shall watch this. Probably some scenes more than others. . . oh yes.

Wasn't she killed by the garage door, not the opener? :)

Agreed on her lack of muscles, but McGowan is one of few actresses in Hollywood that has a believable fierceness about her. I buy it. Just glad nobody is touching my beloved Barbarella!

I'm actually into this idea. Despite some hysterical moments (guy getting mashed by a giant round door), the 80s Red Sonya really was kind of a Conan yarn and didn't feel like much else. So I don't think anyone has anything to lose giving this a shot.

Robocop, well, that's a different story...

Um, based on the posters, is this an action film or porn?

My guess is porn.

Being thin is not the same thing as being in shape. she doesn't look like she's ever had any kind of exercise, unless you include vomiting and cigarettes. She'd have trouble even lifting a sword like that. I'm not looking for some kind of freakishly strong woman but some definition would be nice.

Anyone who would sacrafise Rose's sexiness for realism is obviously not the kind of person who Red Jonja is made for.

This is just one huge b-movie... If you take it seriously, you fail. Rose will be thin. And? So what?
