Critics Consensus: Retreat From Couples Retreat
Plus, The Damned United, Good Hair, and An Education earn high marks.

This week at the movies brings only one wide release: Couples Retreat, starring Vince Vaughn and Kristen Bell in a comedy about a group of friends in marriage counseling in a tropical locale. What do the critics have to say?

Couples Retreat

Couples Retreat contains some of the funniest actors in the business, and is set in a lush island paradise. Sounds like the recipe for a good time, right? Unfortunately, the critics say Couples Retreat is essentially a series of gags sorely in need of some over-arching comic discipline. Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell star as a couple whose relationship is in trouble, so they invite a group of married friends (including Vince Vaughn, Jon Farveau, Kristen Davis, and Malin Ackerman) to a resort for their counseling sessions -- and it turns out the whole gang is required to undergo treatment as well. Hilarity ensues. Or, as the pundits say, it doesn't; the script doesn't give its talented actors much to do, and so despite the occasionally funny line, the characters are too underdeveloped for much comedic momentum to build. (Check out this week's Total Recall, in which we count down Vaughn's best-reviewed films, as well as director Peter Billingsley's Five Favorite Films).

Also opening this week in limited release:

  • The Damned United, starring Michael Sheen as Brian Clough, the legendary manager of the English soccer team Leeds United, is at 91 percent.
  • Good Hair, a documentary in which Chris Rock explores complex relationship between African Americans and their hair, is at 88 percent.
  • An Education, starring Peter Sarsgaard and Carey Mulligan in a Nick Hornby-scripted drama about an ambitious young woman whose life changes when she falls for an older man, is at 83 percent.
  • The Yes Men Fix the World, a gonzo documentary starring the titular political pranksters, is at 81 percent.
  • Araya, a rediscovered 1959 drama about menial laborers in Venezuela, is at 80 percent.
  • Bronson, a dark comedy about the famous jailbird of the same name, is at 74 percent.
  • Peter and Vandy, a dramedy that follows a young couple in various stages of their relationship, is at 64 percent.
  • Adventures of Power, starring Ari Gold and Michael McKean in an indie comedy about a wannabe air-drummer, is at 17 percent.
  • Free Style, starring High School Musical's Corbin Bleu as an aspiring motocross racer, is at 11 percent.

Define Talented.

Vaughn sucks, just read the posts about his "top 10" films. He's so bad, there are rotten films listed in his top ten.

Movie looks TERRIBLE.

Couples Retreat looks like another movie where Vince Vaughn brings his same old comedic tone. From the critics, the film sounds like it was poorly directed and theres no real compelling story to go on. Once again it looks like Vince Vaughn delivers a terrible movie.

"Couples Retreat" is this year's "Four Christmases", which the previous year's "Fred Claus" (not really), which was the previous year's "The Break Up", which was the previous year's "Wedding Crashers", which was the previous year's "Dodgeball", which was the previous year's "Old School" (which is actually pretty funny), which is...no, that's it. Over half a decade doing the same thing, here's to you Vince Vaughn.

I think his latest looks pretty bad, but I did laugh in the ad when the dude "I'm Stanley, with a 'C'." That's kinda funny.

Forget Vince Vaughn, what about Jason Bateman? He is such a funny guy, but it seems like all of his movies since Smokin' Aces have been terrible, or at least disappointing. We've come to expect bad movies from Vince, but Bateman is such an underrated comedic actor.

Really...'Swingers' was one of the best movies in the past two decades. Yeah, Vince does some stinkers but if you mention him without mentioning 'Swingers' then you really have no clue what you're talking about.

HEY! I was naming films that he did year after year as the same character! "Swingers" was from 1996, 8 years before his streak of bad to okay comedies. So I know what I'm talking about. Sucka.

Yeah, Swingers doesn't count. It made Vaughn's career. Of course it will be great. And of course his new movie would be bad. You know the actors took the job so they could just hang out in the tropics, a notorious reason why this crap island movies are often made. Thank God no more interesting movies came out this week. A lot of good ones came out last week that I still have to see, oh, and Inglorious Basterds. Oh, well, at least it won't be full.

Is it just me, or does Couples Retreat look like it was filmed entirely in front of a green screen?

Wedding crashers was funny, fred claus and the breakup were not bad. This movie looks like it could be good. Not The Hangover good but a fun time.

Skipping the Retreat, though I admire Jason Bateman, and am a big fan of Malin Akerman, and Kristen Davis, I'd rather watch them in Sex & the City, verry funny movie, Watchmen, great film, and Extract, another under-rated Bateman movie again. Good Hair seems funny though so I may check that one out, and the trailer for An Education seemed good, I'll see that in the coming weeks.

Remove Jane Lynch from Adventures of Power and Jason Bateman from Couples Retreat, get a talented comedic writer to write something worthy of everyone's time then hire a director who isn't a child actor and make something good.

The commercials for this thing just looked weak. The whole 'circle of life/Circling Our Lives' was about the lamest joke I've ever heard Vince Vaughn choke out. Sad.

if this film sucks...the writer/director should be b3tch slapped. how can you make a crap comedy with THAT cast? i'm hopeful since critics don't seem to like it, they never get it right anymore.

This is a terrible week for films as Couples Retreat looks awful, I really doubt I'd watch it.

Oh Vince Vaughn, you are SO not funny. As many have stated, he's been playing the same annoying character for the better part of a decade. I can't stand him. I find it hard to believe that this movie is so incredibly unfunny with the cast it has. I'll be checking it out anyway. I don't trust critics. Most are windbags.

I haven't paid any money to see a Vince Vaugn movie on the big screen yet and I'll probably continue this trend, Meanwhile I'm still waiting for Zombieland to come to town.
