Consensus: The story is not new, but the film gets credit for trying to move away from the genre's cliches. Kirsten Dunst and newcomer Jay Hernandez give believable performances.

The film offers a grittier, more realistic take on the subject than most. It manages to be sweetly romantic without pandering to, or insulting, the intelligence of its intended audience. Director John Stockwell uses an unobtrusive, verité style to bring a strong script from debut screenwriters Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi to the screen. Stockwell began his film career as an actor (perhaps best known for playing the main character's best friend and protector in John Carpenter's CHRISTINE), and that experience is evident in his handling of the cast. The multifaceted Kirsten Dunst (BRING IT ON) plays the troubled Nicole, a rich girl whose self-destructive behavior stems from a traumatic experience in her past. Newcomer Jay Hernandez makes a strong impression as Carlos, a talented, intelligent, straight-laced Latino boy determined to succeed despite the obstacles life has thrown at him. When the two hook up, cultures clash. CRAZY/BEAUTIFUL has a rare freshness and authenticity, providing a different perspective on the family lives of these teens, and allowing the chemistry between the attractive and engaging lead actors to guide the film. Reviews for Crazy/Beautiful
Not just a movie about adolescents, it's an adolescent movie-with all the desperate passion and misty conclusions you might expect.
A nifty piece of teenage romantic piffle, it combines two strong and attractive performances with a shameless 'they live in two different worlds' plot line to amiably entertaining effect.
Kirsten Dunst ... nails her performance as a spoiled 17-year-old screw-up whose dimple-faced charm and youthful exuberance bely a bent for intoxicated self-destruction.
What is refreshing about crazy/beautiful is Stockwell does not sensationalize the material. He's more interested in exploring the perils of first love.
A rare teen film that spends less time pandering to wish-fulfilling fantasies than baring honest interpersonal realities.
While you've probably seen this story before, crazy/beautiful dodges many stereotypes.
Standard-issue romantic melodrama pitched specifically to teen-agers.
Let this be a lesson to all young filmmakers -- even the most familiar stories can seem fresh if they have the right cast and are done with a bit of intelligence.
It seems unbelievable -- crazy, even -- to use the word 'integrity' in a review of a teen-oriented movie. But this one has it.
Painting stock situations in a distinctive hue, this is the exceptional film that transcends its own triteness.
The two talented stars both have enough inner light to almost convince us that what's going on matters, but they are stymied by the fact that their performances are geared to a tragedy the movie fails to fulfill.
As Hollywood teen movies go, crazy/beautiful takes two steps forward and one step back. It's at war with itself. On the one hand, it wants to push the genre envelope, and does. But then it suffers a failure of nerve.
...never gets out of the shallow end of the pool with its tale of star-crossed love.
Well cast and heartfelt, and its script tries to avoid many of the cliches of the genre.
