"300" Site Goes Live
by Scott Weinberg | December 23, 2005

Borrowing a page from Peter Jackson, "Dawn of the Dead" director Zack Snyder is participating in an interactive website for his upcoming adaptation of Frank Miller's "300," a project that sounds, well, pretty damn awesome if you ask me.

"Based on the epic graphic novel by Frank Miller, "300" is a ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing insurmountable odds, their valor and sacrifice inspire all of Greece to unite against their Persian enemy, drawing a line in the sand for democracy. The film brings Miller’s ("Sin City") acclaimed graphic novel to life by combining live action with virtual backgrounds that capture his distinct vision of this ancient historic tale."

Starring alongside Gerard Butler are Dominic West, David Wenham, Lena Headey, and Vincent Regan. The new website promises blog entries, production diaries, and all sorts of behind-the-scenes tidbits from the "300" set. The WB project is scheduled for release in late 2006.

Huge graphic novel reader and frank miller is one of the best in the biz. Sin City was incredible, why should this be any less? Expect "300" to be one of the best films of the year in 06.

All these fine actors in an inspiring, action-filled story shot in the style of a famous graphic novel by a young talented director -- heck, yeah! this is going to rock! Take a look at the production log on the web site. Verry cool!

One problem with the casting. King Leonidas was 60 years of age when he fought in the battle of Thermopylae. Butler doesn't look 60. It's historically inaccurate, which, in my opinion takes away from the whole story. This isn't just a story, it actually happened in Greece, and I personally think that Steven Pressfield book, Gates of Fire, captures the battle accurately. This film will be nothing much more than entertainment, while the actual battle was tragic, heroic and immortal.
