Consensus: Featuring an excellent ensemble cast, a precise feel for the 1970s, and a killer soundtrack, Dazed and Confused is a funny, affectionate, and clear-eyed look at high school life.

On the last day of school in May 1976, students at a suburban Texas high school wait, lackadaisically, for classes to end. The restless almost-seniors--an eclectic group of stone-heads, fraternal jocks, and snobby sorority girls--can't wait to haze the incoming freshman, an annual event as harrowing for freshman boys as it is humiliating for girls. Amidst this teenage wasteland of drugs, partying, and rock and roll is football star Pink (Jason London), who saves scrawny pre-frosh Mitch (Wiley Wiggins) from being paddled to oblivion by upper-classmates. But Pink has his own battles: he's struggling over the head coach's demand that football players sign a pledge to abstain from sex and all psychoactive substances. When a wild end-of-the-year party is cancelled, the students end up congregating at a beer-blast in the back woods, organized by aging hang-about Wooderson (Matthew McConaughey). In the same way that George Lucas assembled a cast of fresh young faces for AMERICAN GRAFFITI, Linklater here creates an unforgettable cast of characters that are immediately familiar to anyone who has ever been through high school. Reviews for Dazed and Confused
Inconsistent stoner comedy that looks back fondly at the '70's. McConaughey gives a standout performance as the creepy older guy picking up on High School girls.
Dazed and Confused is a more modern American Graffiti -- and just as classic.
You gotta love a movie, flaws and all, that's all about cars, bongs, hot girls, kegs, misdemeanors, rock and roll all night and party every day!
An amazing film because of the way it perfectly captures the time period, and how it manages to carry so many characters and make every one of them interesting. Most films would be worthwhile if they could create one character as deep as these.
Linklater shreds the very fabric of what's expected in a teen comedy.
The performances are persuasive down to the smallest part, and Linklater has a fine ear for the unexpectedly loopy turns of phrase that make these teenagers come to life.
This film started a number of careers, and it's definitely a classic and a high moment in the career of director Richard Linklater.
The ultimate party movie -- loud, crude, socially irresponsible and totally irresistible.
For a film like this, casting is everything, and the players are quite appealing.
Succeeds on its own terms and reflects American culture so well, it becomes part of it.
This is light entertainment -- nothing groundbreaking or even especially noteworthy.
Every one of these characters is completely familiar and recognizable; so far this has held true for every viewer I have spoken with, whether they graduated from high school 25 years ago or last week.
The film's real inspiration, I think, is to depict some high school kids from the 1970s with such unblinking attention that we will realize how romanticized most movie teenagers are.
