HBO Uncertain on Deadwood Finale Movies
New surfer show higher priority than the #*&!*$# Wild West?
by Fred Topel | July 18, 2007

Fans of Deadwood are still waiting for some closure. The idea of some TV movies wrapping up the series sounded fine, but they're nowhere to be seen. HBO President of Programming Michael Lombardo is not even sure they can make it happen.

Deadwood creator David Milch is ostensibly planning the two wrap-up films, but he's got a new HBO show to produce first.

"We're just finishing [the new show] John from Cincinnati so David [Milch] is, needless to say, exhausted," said Lombardo. We haven't had the conversation with him about scheduling the production of those movies since he's been immersed in John From Cincinatti."

That other show demanding Milch's attention is only one of the things holding things up. "Look, it's always been our intention to do them. It is complicated. We don't have holds on the actors anymore. David is busy doing John. We'll see what happens with John. But we will revisit this with David at the end of the summer, after he's had a little bit of a rest and after we know what the future of John is for him. It's certainly on our books as something we're still interested in."

Then there are actors to worry about. "We're going to have to schedule them in a way where we're going to have to bring back an entire array of actors, many of whom have moved onto other shows. Molly Parker is on a new series. Tim Olyphant is doing movies. Again, I think that's one reason we decided to do movies as opposed to a season, knowing that that may be a shorter schedule, but it's doable. It will just be daunting. If David's game for this and we can figure this out, we're going to figure it out."

Why didn't they just continue with the series then?

I can only guess that they didn't feel the ratings were high enough to warrant the production costs, but there were enough fans screaming for an end that they could as least do that.

This show is awesome and I'd love to see a movie or two closing this series.

I agree. Deadwood's writing is on par with Shakespeare. It's one of the best dramas to ever grace our f@#kin' television screens. Let's hope those c#@k s#@kers at HBO get it together and give this series the finale it deserves!

It was because of low ratings coupled with a staggering cost of about $4-5 million per episode along with taking just over 2 weeks to film one episode.

Ya know they say that, but at the time it was cancelled Powers Booth was probably the biggest name on the show, You've already got the sets built and no one ever changes clothes. I know I'm oversimplifying, but really where do all these production cost go? Was Ian McShane stealing from the snack table or something?

God knows the show they replaced it with (John from Cincinnati) sucks. Not sure if it's getting better ratings than did Deadwood.

This is horsesh*t, season three built up to these movies that they said would be the finale. Now their more concerned with a C*ckS*cker From Cincinnati. HBO Entourage and Curb Your Enthusiasm is all you got now. Oh yeah Cathouse is classic as well. Hope the time at the top was fun, its kinda like the last song on the Sopranos, DONT STOP BELIEVING as I cut to black on my subscription.

HBO has no clue what they're doing anymore. They axe all their best shows (Carnivale, Deadwood, Rome), extend Sopranos unnecessarily (It was supposed to end on season 5, not Season 6.5), and refill their line-up with poorly acted crap (John from Cincinnati). Clearly the people in charge have lost their minds, and lost touch with their audiences. What once was the channel that hosted the best shows on TV, is now the channel to watch if you want to end up screaming with rage a season or two down the road.

If you're not going to give us the deadwood tv movies, then give us some carnivale ones instead. one of the two, or both.
or create a new show that it just as good.

I really hope they tie things up with this series. Not only because I really enjoyed the show and its characters, but to not do so would make me think twice before sinking anymore time into an hbo series.

yeah, seriously. I want some carnivale closure! I LOVE THAT SHOW! damn HBO, at least Showtime keeps on pumping out quality seasons of Dexter & Weeds! I haven't actually sat down to watch Dead Wood yet, but now that I know it is going the way of Carnivale, i'm not sure if i'm going to take the time. I'm sure I will end up watching it anyways, but it is non the less disapointing.

They have to do these movies. Deadwood was a great ****ing show and needs the closure. The way they ended season 3 was insanity. HBO dropped the ball on OZ, the Sopranos, they cannot do the same to Deadwood.

If HBO leaves me hanging, I will never again subscribe/buy/rent/get sucked into another one of their productions. Period.

I check out the Deadwood DVD's from the local library. I just finished viewing the third season. That's it? No more chapters?
This is bull****. I was looking forward to the next set of DVD's. There was no closure at the end of year three. I mean, things have some kinda ending...right?
I really looked forward to watching this series. This wasn't the same load of insipid crap shovelled out by hacks. This was interesting characters and situations.I've known guys just like this, both in the Corps and in prison.
The ******* Hearst rides out of town...and that ends it? Who done this travesty?
Man, I'm PO'd about this jive. The suits in charge here outa be tossed to the hogs.
Add me to the complainers.
