Joan Allen and Ian McShane Strap In for Death Race
Allen joins cast of upcoming Roger Corman remake.

Joan Allen, who you recently saw reprising her role as a CIA spook in The Bourne Ultimatum, is teaming up with Universal again for another action flick: Death Race. Allen will play the prison warden who coerces Jason Statham's character into the titular competition of doom.

Paul W.S. Anderson is directing this remake of Roger Corman's pulp masterpiece, Death Race 2000. Both films take place in a dystopic future where sadistic, ultraviolent car races have taken over as the national sport. Jason Statham stars as prisoner-cum-driver named Frakenstein, with Tyrese Gibson in the supporting role of Machine Gun Joe, and Ian McShane as a coach.

Production starts later this year, with Universal aiming for a late 2008 release date. Check out IGN's video interview with Paul Anderson, who talks about his upcoming films, including Resident Evil: Extinction and Death Race.

Top Story: Hollywood scrapes bottom of barrel, breaks through.

I was a little excited when I first read the headline, but then I saw that it's being directed by the man responsible for Alien Vs. Predator and has a role for Tyrese Gibson just to make sure there'll be more than a nominal similarity to "2 Fast 2 Furious."

Normally I don't complain about remakes, but the original, strangely enough, actually has a lot of sentimental value to me.

The answer: Money. There are no real artists in Hollywood, anymore. Just shameful whores who'll make any piece of crap if the money is right. Just at some of the big names Uwe Boll gets for his craptacular movies.

McShane would have actually have been perfect in the role of Machine Gun Joe if they were serious about this.

If Joan Allen was one of the drivers, this could've actually been buzz worthy. As is, it sounds like Anderson's roundabout way of making a Twisted Metal film.

I watched Deathrace 2000 last month...and hell, what's all the fanfare about? "Its so bad it good.??' Any remake could only be better. take it frame by frame and it would be blasted by the critics.

Now, making it Twisted Metal 2 would go no wrong/

I agree, the first was great when I was like 10, but I saw it a few years back and boy, what a piece of crap. A remake can only be better, especially with the talent involved.

I liked "Death Race 2000" for the obvious siht it was. You really need to "get" Roger Corman to enjoy one of his films in this era. 4 words for this remake: BRING BACK SYLVESTER STALLONE! (Hell, he's remaking all his other films anyway).
