Children of Men should sweep the technical Oscars. It deserves to win a lot more than that but I doubt that'll happen.

Babel
I don't understand how anyone can say Babel only suceeds on the surface. The film's core more than adequately addresses the contradictions that arise when human interconnectedness is belied by our inherent inability to communicate on any truly meaningful level. If that theme isn't relevent to not only personal relationships, but also the misrepresentation rampant in our mass media, I don't know what is.

Saying that Babel is shallow only underscores the film's message, that surfaces are illusory and that the soul of a person (conflict, film, etc.) is ignored in favor of easy answers that satisfy media and stereotypical expectations.

i thought children of men was a very above average movie, not great, but pretty good, until the last 25 minutes or so, when it was lifted to a great movie. those battle scenes. wow.

also, to the guy who said they should give the "best original score" category to superman returns.... uh, im pretty sure they used that "original score" in superman 1-5, thereby making it not original, just like superman returns

I really don't understand the Babel bashing. I thought it was the best film of the year by quite a substantial margin, and that's saying something considering the amount of very good films we were treated to this year. Children of Men was excellent, but I found Babel to be better in most respects. Not only should it have won the Golden Globe for best picture, but it's unfortunate that Inarritu wasn't recognized for his absolutely jaw dropping direction. Rinko Kikuchi was also more than deserving of recognition for her astounding performance, and the fact that Dreamgirls is stealing such awards is absurd.
