The Golden Globes Are Here, And They're Spectacular...Wins for Mirren, Whitaker, "Dreamgirls" and "Babel"

Sound the alarms! Tonight's telecast (8pm EST) of the 64th Annual Golden Globes Awards signaled the real start of Oscar mania, so check out our list of winners...and weigh in with your own two cents on who won, who should've won, and who definitely should not have worn what. RESULTS IN NOW!!

Royal thesps Helen Mirren and Forest Whitaker took home Best Actor nods (for "The Queen" and "The Last King of Scotland," respectively) as expected, and "Dreamgirls" re-cemented its still-potent Oscar power with three wins (Jennifer Hudson for Best Supporting Actress, Eddie Murphy for Best Supporting Actor, and "Dreamgirls" for Best Picture - Comedy/Musical).

"The Departed" director Martin Scorsese capitalized on his recent Awards Season favor by nabbing Best Director, while fellow nominee Clint Eastwood collected a Globe for Best Foreign Film (the Japanese-language "Letters From Iwo Jima").

"The Queen" also won for Best Screenplay, written by Peter Morgan; limited release period flick "The Painted Veil" threw its name into the public eye by winning the award for Best Score.

Sacha Baron Cohen's Best Comedy Actor win for "Borat" was one of the night's highlights, with an acceptance speech that gave new meaning to the term "Golden Globes."

The show's capper -- presented by the Governator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger (he used to be in the movies, right?) -- awarded the Best Drama trophy to surprise pick "Babel," instantly renewing that film's chances come Oscar time.

No, I kinda saw Eddie Murphy's win coming. All over the trade mags the ads are really aggressive in pushing those two against each other for supporting actor nods. It's a fight between Brad Pitt and Eddie Murphy but this GG win gives Eddie a bit of an edge. The SAG wins will be telling of who will really go home with acting Oscars.

I don't get it. That movie had no message to it, no higher meaning, no nothing except characters becoming victims of fate. The Japanese schoolgirl storyline does not belong in that movie. I loved Amores Perros and 21 Grams, so I'm dumbfounded why this movie, Inaritu's least compelling, is the one getting awards. I can think of two reasons: 1) Brad Pitt and the pub he brings with, and 2) the idea about how important all cultures are from a global standpoint. I think it would be hilarious if Babel didn't even get niminated for Best Picture at the Oscars, much like the GGs never even nominated Crash last year. I do know that whatever movie pushes United 93 out of the Best Picture category is going to feel my ire.

I know RottenTomatoes is a movie site but when printing the winners and losers of the Golden Globes, the TV categories should be included. Elizabeth was made for HBO but was still a film, why should it be excluded! Also, considering shows like "The Wire" and "Weeds' which have as much of a story line and superior quality to most movies out today, why is Rotten Tomatoes ignoring them. These movies and shows still end up on DVD and feautured on this site anyway, why not talk about them??

First, a movie shouldn't be nominated based on its message, but on how well-crafted it is (and heaven forbid it have an entertainment aspect to it -- thought that was the point of this whole film thing).

At the Golden Globes/Oscars it's never about the best movie; unfortunately, it's about the most politically, socially relevant (at least according to Hollywood standards) /PC /hollywood style thinking (e.g. Bobby, Crash) movie (that and getting to play dress up for the cameras one more time :)).

Here's for more nominations for movies that are well executed, entertaining, and don't try to be heavy-handed with the political/social messages (score 1 for The Departed :))

yeah I wish poeple would realize how lil GG means, its voted on by the hollywood foriegn press and the awards are the most politically correct awards given. By that I mean the awards are not given by merit but rather circumstance beyond merit, its basically a popularity contest.

I am so glad Babel won! I don't undersatnd what people are talking about it was by far the best movie of the year! Children of Men should have been released earlyier so they would have actually had time to nominate it!

Eddie Murphy is a really bad actor who fell into a part that was just right for him!

Dreamgirls should not have won, it should have been Little Miss Sunshine or Borat!

I agree a film shouldn't be nominated or awarded on message alone. If that were the case Edward Zwick would have a house built with Oscars and other awards. But Babel fails for me because it has nothing below the surface. Everything feels skin-deep, it has no greater depth of analysis, and most of the people are victims of poor decisions and most of their storylines have no lasting impact. I just don't get why people are falling over themselves for Babel when it is inferior to 21 Grams and Amores Perros. I felt the movie was well made but has nothing to warrant ever thinking about it again.

I was dissapointed and found the show mostly predictible. Little Miss Sunshine, and The Departed should have won the Best Picture awards. At least Scorsese, and Grey's Anatomy won.

COuldn't agree more. Pointless copy of Crash that doesn't say a damn thing about anything and really left me feeling no emotion for any of the characters at all.

Happy Kyra won though, my girlfriend's Dad is chief producer for TNT and the Closer so I was all too happy to route for her! That and she's a great actress...
