User Tomato Awards: "The Departed" Is Your Favorite of 2006

The votes are in, and "The Departed" is the number one flick of the year according to the User Tomato Awards. Martin Scorsese's engrossing crime drama topped such user faves as "Little Miss Sunshine," "Casino Royale," "The Prestige," and "Children of Men."

"The Departed," starring Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Matt Damon, is an Academy Award nominee for Best Picture, but for those in RT land, it's already number one. User hotpinksky wrote, "This is the best $9 + you will spend this year."

"The results are in... and the RT users love you guys."

Indie fave and fellow Best Picture nominee "Little Miss Sunshine" came in at number two. This tale of a dysfunctional family on the road, starring Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell, and Abigail Breslin, was a surprise hit this summer, and obviously struck a chord with RT users. As user notquitesane wrote, "I absolutely loved, loved, loved this movie."

the Departed was the best movie of 06 and proof that martin scorsese deserves and Oscar now more than any other year before. give the man waht rightfully belongs to him.

Eh, I'm not too thrilled. I'll be the last to say The Departed wasn't a good movie, but I'd have preferred The Prestige taking this spot....

Ah well, at least it's not Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. For a moment, I thought the RT population would be stupid enough to support it for Flick of '06. Guess not =)

I hate to say it, but The Departed didin't exactly blow my skirt up.
Then again, remakes rarely do.
Considering the incredible strength of the source material and an apparently unlimited budget, Scorcese should have been able to create a masterwork.
Instead, if seemed like he sorta half-assed it, hoping that the star power and the plot twists would be enough.

The Prestige did more with less... and had David Bowie :)

Departed is not "loosely based", not "inspired", not "revisioned" It's a REMAKE of Infernal Affairs ! Scene for scene, from one plot twist to the next, even the camera angles are the same- it all screams REMAKE !

Funny how the dvd mentions little about it's source material.

Let the poor guy (Scorsese) have the Oscar but Infernal Affairs will forever be joined at the hip with this one.

actually I've seen the three infernal affairs movies and I can tell you that IA2 is a better movie than the IA and the departed
the first sequel is the story of the rise of the sam/frank character and his rivalry with the police captain wong/queenan, you should check it out
IA is bare bones plot, there's no almost no character development, all you can know about them you learn it from andy lau and tony leong's amazing performances
and don't even bother with IA3, it's a mess

The Prestige just tore everything else to shit this year, just a brilliant film with one of the best screenplays in years. Tops of the year overall were Prestige, United 93, The Departed, Children of Men, Pan's Labyrinth (that young lead girl is in another league!) and Akeelah and the Bee (criminally overlooked!@#).

In probably the worst year for movies since I became a movie geek and the first time I've ever had a comedy at number one. Still have a good twenty something more to see though so it might change a little bit.

Really The Prestige? I almost have to believe this is just people agreeing with concensus. I can't believe the Prestige would make this many peoples top 5 list. I actually thought it was pretty boring which surprised me cause I really like Christian Bale and Micheal Caine and don't loath Hugh Jackman or Scarlett.

POTENTIAL SPOILER IF YOU HAVEN"T SEEN THE MOVIE. My main problem with it was I had it figured out 5 minutes before the Prestige for each event was revealed so there was a feeling of "really that's it? I had that figured out ages ago" Seriously who couldn't tell that was Christian Bale in make-up as soon as they saw him and figure out that's how he was doing his trick. Certainly didn't have the quality shock value I look for in this kind of movie. Films that did it better (The Usual Suspects, Lucky Number Slevin and all M. Night Shamaylans early works). Don't get me wrong that acting was top notch, really just think the story needs work if you're gonna put it on a top 5 list.

Thank, GOD, somebody realizes this was a boring, predictable film. I was sitting through this amazed at how easy the quote, "biggest mystery of all" was to figure out.
This film was very stupid and took itself too seriously.
Thank God for RT members like you, bigbrother.

Oh, you're just saying that because I'm great :) Seriously though, didn't like the film except the parts that had Tesla. I think that should have been the whole movie. Would have been much more interesting.
