Those of you who had "Shia LaBeouf walking around a post-plague landscape with a monkey" on the list of things you wanted to see before you died may soon have your dreams come true.

This news comes courtesy of USA Today, which interviewed director D.J. Caruso on the eve of the 60th (and final) issue of Y: The Last Man's arrival in comic shops. Caruso, as you may already be aware, is gearing up for an adaptation of the popular Brian K. Vaughan series, and given that Caruso worked with LaBeouf on Disturbia -- and is currently directing him in Eagle Eye -- rumors have long put LaBeouf in center stage for Y as well.

Telling USA Today that he has had "preliminary discussions" with LaBeouf for the role of Yorick (the monkey-owning last man on Earth), Caruso discussed his reasons for wanting to make a Y: The Last Man film:

"For me, thematically, the most important thing and the reason I want to do this is...I don't want to say it's the end of the innocence, but it's actually a man-child who has to become a real man now. I think it's a really simple, beautiful theme, but at the same time, the movie's really pop-culture entertainment."

Caruso also tells the paper that -- surprise! -- he'll be filming Y with an eye toward turning it into a trilogy. While the move only makes sense -- you try boiling 60 issues of a comic down into a two-hour movie -- we doubt New Line is complaining about possible sequels.

Shia will be perfect, but can this work as a movie? All these graphic novels based adaptations would work much better as television series. I imagine they'll be using CGI for the monkey? The roles for females could be endless. Ladies, get your head shots ready.

I don't see this as a single movie (59 issues, all essential to the plot? You can only watered the thing down).

They should do this as a TV series, like "The preacher", which may work (despite the fact that the guy who trashed "Daredevil" is helming it, so I remain a little bit skeptical about it, too).

What about a "100 bullets" TV series?? BRING IT ON NOW!!!

Good comic-book, but far away from the best Vertigo titles, which, in my opinion, are:

a) Hellblazer (when it was written by Garth Ennis).
b) Sandman.
c) 100 bullets.
d) Preacher.
e) Mark Millar's Swamp Thing (I'm not including Alan Moore's because they were published before the beginning of the Vertigo imprint).
f) Ex Machina.
g) The invisibles.

The Director actually said there gonna make more then one film, I think Shia Labouf could be good. I remeber hearing Topher Grace mention who I think would be better.

I agree. Y fits more into a TV series format. I would feel much better about the Feature Film prospects if New Line would just go ahead and give Caruso a 3 picture deal and let him shoot them all at once like Jackson did with Lord of the Rings.

TV is crap, first of all your not going to get someone that knows what they're doing to direct., not to mention budget differences which means cheaper actors, special effects, and bad action sequences. also most networks are greed as **** and if it is a hit they'll want to drag it out for as long as posible and eventually leave the comic, and all of us that are familiar with it, in the dust and just start making **** up.

This should be awesome. This is one of my favorite comics of all time. I'm not the biggest Shia LaBeouf fan but even I have to admit his dorky look would work for this film. 3 parts? I agree and think it would do well. As a television series? thumbs down! Have you seen what they do to good comics and books in the TV world? The craptacular Jeremiah is one, the atrocity that was Earthsea the list goes on. TV does not to fantasy and sci-fi stories well, plus no one watches them but a very small group who watch any crap the Sci-Fi channel dolls out. *END RANT*

The Preacher would be a perfect fit for HBO. And just the fact that it's going to be on HBO is a reason to eagerly anticipate it. However, Johnson being attached, as Weicher stated, is one hell of a reason to worry.

i was thinking ryan reynolds would be good. I just finished watching The Nines, and he surprisingly can pull off funny and charming, and serious acting very well...i just think shia is too "it" right now and not suited for the role in the serious aspect.
