Spike Lee Helps Launch Online Film Festival
Indie filmmakers, mark September 15 on your calendars.

Attention, independent filmmakers: Spike Lee's got your back.

According to a report in The Guardian, the Do the Right Thing director has announced he's helping launch -- and heading up the jury of -- the Babelgum Online Film Festival (or, as we've just decided to call it, BOFF). The festival will, in the article's words, "showcase films that are shorter than 45 minutes long, either shot in English or with English-language subtitles." Submissions will be accepted beginning September 15, and if you've got a got a short film looking for an audience, Spike has some words for you:

"I used to be a struggling independent filmmaker myself and so I understand how important a forum like this one is," Lee said. "With opportunities like this one available these days, a good filmmaker who doesn't get his films seen has only himself to blame."

Some might say Lee was struggling as recently as 2004's She Hate Me, but he's got a point. The festival judges will be looking at films in a wide variety of categories, and will be awarding a number of cash prizes, so what are you waiting for?

I do not understand why they do not allow feature length-- if it sucks turn it off at minute a, b, or c.... i know the inet is moving toward the shorter length film but short length just smacks of film school.... just a thought.

Good for him, it's nice to see a guy who's come good try to lend a helping hand to other strugglers. I am usually one of the first to criticize Spike on his views of inter-racial relations, but this seems pretty awesome and RT, was the little snipe about She Hate Me really necessary? Let the man do his good deed.
