Magnum P.I. Still Taking His Time Getting to the Big Screen
by Scott Weinberg | June 14, 2006

Still dying to hear about some progress on the "Magnum P.I." movie? OK, so far all nine of you, we have a report from IGN FilmForce and UGO.com that basically says the following: It's gonna happen, we don't really know when, and the guy who did "Dodgeball" is currently at work on the screenplay.

From IGNFF & UGO: "I know for a fact that there was a script that Imagine developed that they didn't really feel captured the essence of the series, so they're on to a second writer now. Don Bellisario and Glen Larson have both been contacted about being consultants and executive producers, but I think it's going to be a Brian Grazer movie. I think it will happen, but I don't know," Johnson said.

"I have heard, as you probably have, various ideas about who they would cast as Magnum. George Clooney I keep hearing and Ben Affleck I've heard once as well, but Clooney has denied it on occasion. I think there's a reality to it and I think it will be wonderful, but unfortunately it won't star Tom (Selleck). He was asked to do six or eight TV movies and at that time he really wanted to do it as a feature, so he held out on it and probably now they will consider him too old to do it."

--

Those words come from original series producer Charles Johnson. Of nominal interest is the news that Rawson Marshall Thurber (who did the hilarious "Dodgeball" flick, which I adore) is presently at work on the "Magnum P.I." adaptation.

. . . the guy who did "Dodgeball" is currently at work on the screenplay . . .

That's all I needed to hear. No way am I seeing this. And Selleck IS Magnum . . . and without him and Higgins(and their banter), the material is simply trite B-quality stuff. I heard elsewhere that Selleck has completely said no to this project . . . and even to a cameo(good for him, I say)

People will only see it for the name recognition . . . and when they finally find themselves fooled into watching a terrible movie, they'll feel cheated and leave. And then the studio will make a quick and cool $70 million, prep a sequel which nobody will see . . . and then ditch the franchise for favor of bastardizing another memorable series . . . and all in the name of an almighty greedy buck.

For once, I agree with Zen Bullet
If Tom Selleck isn't going to play Magnum, then why did he keep that mustache all these years?

We should also make movies about MacGuyver and A-Team and Airwolf...

I have an idea for Hollywood. Go back to the 70s and 80s, find the cheesiest TV shows that exist as fond memories for many people but are painful to watch today, and make a movie about it. You had a good thing going with Dukes of Hazzard. Keep it up!

Because honestly, there's nothing better than a remake of a show that's best left in our memory.

The other Don Knotts
ONLY Don Knotts' character as Barney garned as much attention as Higgins did on Magnum P.I. he is vital to the whole series. This should definitely NOT be a comedy it won't work. Selleck won't be cast because the egg heads don't think anyone his age will attract an audience. Well so be it. I don't know who would make a good Magnum but Tim Curry is perhaps the only one who could do the Higgins character justice. Since Hillerman who has shown that he can do ANYONE perhaps cast him as Icepick to give a nod. Selleck too should have a part but he won't make a cameo in a film with fart jokes, and kicks in nuts humor. I loved Dodgeball but this should be a drama especailly since we have now so so many veterans living among us and coming home. After all Magnum was the first show to offer a positive veiw of the Vietnam vets. Just look at the TC character. I'd like to hear back from others on this. What to do with Selleck and who to cast as Magnum.

Donald P. Bellisario leaves NCIS.."Magnum, p.i" cast reunion on Las Vegas..

What if..

Regarding casting of the long awaited "Magnum p.i." movie..

At the website ferrarichat.com (50,000 members worldwide)..
there is a thread titled "Magnum p.i. movie news". In mid 2007..
a message was sent to Rawson Thurber - Imagine Entertainment
alerting him to this thread. The thread reveals strong sentiments
from Magnum,p.i.(tv series) fans that any movie be done only
with original tv series cast members. Recently..a link to the thread
was discovered during a google search about the movie. I wonder if
anyone at Imagine is paying attention to what fans want? *see link:
http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?p=137380644

Many of Donald Bellisario's fans would love to see him involved with
(or heading)the Magnum movie project. Floyd Johnson..please tune in!
