20th Century Fox's Dragonball Rolls to 2009
Ben Stiller is the king of August 15, 2008.
You can go ahead and make new plans for August 15th, Dragonball fans -- James Wong's live-action adaptation won't be hitting screens that weekend.
It won't be coming to theaters at all this year, in fact -- 20th Century Fox has announced that its big-screen version of the Akira Toriyama manga is being pushed back to April 3, 2009.
According to IGN Movies, the studio hasn't offered an official explanation for the move, but the original release date would have put Dragonball up against Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder, as well as the theatrical release of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Dragonball stars Justin Chatwin, James Marsters, Jamie Chung, Emmy Rossum, and Chow Yun-Fat, and follows the adventures of "the heroic Goku, a powerful warrior who protects the Earth from an endless stream of rogues bent on dominating the Universe and controlling the mystical objects from which the film takes its name."

RoadDogXVIII writes: on Mar 06 2008 09:52 AM "Dragon Ball" is such a lucrative franchise that I wonder why Akira Toriyama had to give the rights to James Wong? I mean, judging by the success of "Black Christmas", I wouldn't dare think of it. And whether or not Goku's Asian OR white, and despite the fact that talent like James Marsters and Chow Yun Fat (sorely miscast) are in it, this film is a potential disaster. This is a film that deserves the golden hand of someone like Ridley Scott or Michael Bay (the latter redeemed himself 100% with "Transformers", so **** you haters!). Wong should stick to remaking classic horror films into rancid Razzie winners. (Reply to this) |

IMAmoose24 writes: on Mar 06 2008 02:56 PM I didn't really know there was a difference between Dragonball an Dragonball Z. I used to watch Dragonball Z as a boy all the time. It was pretty intense for me. I guess I grew out of that phase before Dragonball came around. I guess I was a lucky one. (Reply to this) |

John Z. Delorean writes: on Mar 06 2008 03:18 PM One of the worst ideas ever. There's plenty of anime that begs the big screen treatment but the adventures of Goku ain't one of them. (Reply to this) |

sliknik27 writes: on Mar 06 2008 04:16 PM In reply to this comment (#1618023) Really? You liked Transformers that much? I thought it was about 45 minutes too long and the rest was just so-so. Anyways, I agree that this could only be good if treated extremely seriously by a respected director. Picture Lord of the Rings done by Uwe Boll and you'll see what I mean. (Reply to this) |

gnotleo writes: on Mar 07 2008 12:43 PM you guys are underestimating this film, its gonna be the ****ing best in 2009, probably better than Transfomers 2, hopefully that Jame Chatwin guy is somewhat good, it's his big face im worried about, and his hair has to better than being spiked. Other than that, it will be a trilogy, not "if its good enough they will make another one, so on and so forth" (Reply to this) |

~ VENOM ~ writes: on Mar 10 2008 10:08 AM I think that this film has great potential. If done correctly, this film could possibly be one of the best 09' has to offer... That is only if it is done correctly. There are many things that could go wrong that could screw the entire porject up, casting is one of them. If you can't make the character believeable then the whole movie will suck. I can see Chatwin playing Goku's part, with some air brushing and a lot of hair gel he could pull it off. However I am dissappointed that we do not have even a teaser yet. The shooting of the film was supposed to be done this month, I can't believe they haven't given anything out yet. When they do the hype will start to build. This could be a great movie, if done properly... (Reply to this) |

Project2501 writes: on May 13 2008 07:47 PM ..... I personally think they should ditch live action all together. It'll just look silly. I grew up watching this series too, and I think that their best bet would be with CGI, like Appleseed Ex Machina, that way you could still have people with talent do voiceovers or have them be the basis for models and not look absolutely ridiculous.... kireiwa writes: on Aug 22 2008 10:52 AM I see a few people whom have said that Goku does not deserve a big screen adventure. Many complain about how it will turn out, and their fears are valid. Yet no one expected Mortal Kombat to be any good, and I am sure a surviving Manga series, as old as the hills, does deserve big screen credit. I am just going to wait and see what happens....go in with an open mind and leave with what ever the movie cares to share. (Reply to this) |
