Starring Jessica Tandy as Daisy Werthan and Morgan Freeman as Hoke Colburn, the film opens in late-1940s Atlanta. Since Miss Daisy is becoming a menace behind the wheel, her son, Boolie (Dan Aykroyd), ignores her protests and hires Hoke, a black chauffeur. When the feisty matron decides to resist necessity and walk to the store, the equally stubborn chauffeur follows her in her car. As he says to Boolie, "I used to rassle hogs down to the ground...ain't nary a hog got away from me yet." But Hoke's methods are gentleness and patience, and as the years elapse in his ongoing tug-of-war with the temperamental Daisy, she begins to tacitly acknowledge his wisdom. When she expresses annoyance over the demands of the nascent civil rights movement, Hoke points out to the Jewish woman the similarity between the attack on her synagogue and Klan attacks on black churches. But it is only after many years together that they can finally admit to the depth of the friendship they have shared. The two stars give unforgettable performances, and Beresford's direction is a model of restraint. [More]

Reviews for Driving Miss Daisy
There is an exhilarating, singularly theatrical lightness of touch that is often lost when these settings are made manifest in a movie.
A warm and honest film, well-written and directed with a lot of style and flair.
...a warm, cozy, genial human drama that probably says in its own way as much about getting along with other people as any more overtly 'message' film ever has.
Freeman and Tandy are superb, assured, and fully involved with this material and each other; the ending of this film quite literally brings tears to my eyes with its compassion and humanity.
Standout performances by Tandy and Freeman, plus strong support from Dan Aykroyd. It's quaint and comfortable.
The film fills in the backgrounds of the white characters, but not the black ones.
This is Tandy's finest two hours onscreen in a film career that goes back to 1932.
Led by riveting performances from Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy, this Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy-drama is utterly enthralling, though also quite spare and intimate.
The movie gets you mainly because Morgan Freeman, who played chauffeur Hoke Colburn in the original stage production (and won his third Obie for it), takes the wheel and drives Daisy all the way home.
There just is not enough to turn this from a good film into a truly memorable one.
