Allan Dwan's last film, an adaptation of Herman Melville's idyllic novel of the South Seas, stars Dana Andrews as sailor Abner Bedford. Set in the 1840s, the story focuses on Abner and shipmate Tom (Don Dubbins), who jump ship, tired of the harsh discipline of Capt, Vangs (Ted de Corsia), when their vessel docks at a lush South Sea island. Following a string of brief adventures, they arrive at the settlement of the native tribe. Although the sailors are sequestered, they are treated well by the natives, who happen to have the habit of cannibalism. Abner becomes interested in Fayaway (Jane Powell) the chief's granddaughter, and he approves their burgeoning romance. Trader Jimmy Dooley (Arthur Shields) arrives, informing the chief (Frederick Ledebur) that he's made a deal with Capt. Vang to make a deal for the absent sailors, but the chief refuses. After receiving the chief's approval, Abner and Fayaway are married in a native ceremony, but the sailor's happiness is curtailed when he learns that Tom, still fearing for his life, has taken off into the jungle. In a film that has little to do with Melville's bestselling novel, Andrews seem like a dislocated insurance executive, and Powell, a girl in search of a prom dress.
