Director Paul Mazursky's haunting and atmospheric drama, based on the novel by Isaac Bashevis Singer, stars Ron Silver as Herman, a Jewish refugee who escapes the horrors of WWII and struggles to start his life anew in New York, working as a ghostwriter for a prominent New York rabbi (Alan King). Herman lives in a dissatisfied daze, haunted by the loss of his wife, Tamara (Anjelica Huston), and their children, believed to have been killed in concentration camps. He marries Yadwiga (Margaret Sophie Stein), a kindly, uneducated Gentile who sheltered him during the war. However, Herman lives a double life, and his new wife knows nothing of his work as a ghostwriter or of his seductive mistress, Masha (Lena Olin), a bitter and emotionally damaged Holocaust survivor whom he deeply loves. Herman's already complicated life is turned upside down when his wife reappears. Shocked at the reappearance of Tamara, long thought dead, Herman must face his own dishonesty and disillusion while juggling relationships with three very different women. Gritty and realistic, this painful and poignant tale of loss and redemption weaves the three worlds together in a climax that is both bittersweet and hopeful. The mood of postwar New York is gorgeously rendered by production designer Pato Guzman. [More]
