In these days of "bigger is better" moviemaking, we're lucky to find even one interesting or compelling character per film. So it's extraordinary to find a drama like Eve's Bayou, which has enough of them for three or four movies.

Reviews for Eve's Bayou
A rich and emotional look at one small community and is not a bad debut writing and directing effort by Kasi Lemmons.
Smollett, however, is a find with a smile that illuminates the screen -- the dominant performer in a uniformly well-acted film.
For the viewer, it is a reminder that sometimes films can venture into the realms of poetry and dreams.
In a movie year already highlighted by the emergence of bold new talents like Neil LaBute and Paul Thomas Anderson, Kasi Lemmons is further cause for celebration.
After sketching the outline of a thriller, Lemmons fills in the boxes with a feel-good sitcom.
To miss this film, would be to be miss one of the finest and most hypnotic films of the year, a rare masterwork.
This is a first outing as a writer and director by actress Kasi Lemmons, and damn, what an excellent start.
