wfwalton writes: on Apr 28 2008 06:31 PM No, the movie didn't say evolution would turn you into a Nazi, but it WAS used by the Nazis to justify "survival of the fittest" in the conflict of humankind and the elimination of "useless eaters." Naturalism says there are not absolute, objective standards of morality. The words of those interviewed are clear but disturbing. (Reply to this) |

licon writes: on Apr 30 2008 07:51 AM The film review of Expelled done by Reece Pendleton is one of the most dishonest reviews I have read in a long time. The review begins by saying %u201CEmbracing evolutionary theory will turn you into a close-minded, God-denying Nazi--that's the upshot of this ludicrous propaganda piece%u201D. In fact the movie no where says or claims this. Rather it is an emotionally charged misread of the section on Nazism. What the film does show is the historically verifiable link between Darwinism and Nazism as argued for by Historian Dr. Richard Weikart, department head of history at California State University, Stanislaus. Dr. Weikart%u2019s book on the topic has received positive reviews from Dr Richard Evans of Cambridge, Dr. Kellet of Hamilton College, and Kevin Repp of Yale University. Instead of honestly reviewing the positions argued in the film by Professor Weikart, Pendleton gives us a ridiculous misread of the film and gives no mention that the ideas in the film are predicated on the serious scholarship of Dr. Weikart. Americans expect more from the Chicago Reader. (Reply to this) |

szaleniec writes: on Jul 09 2008 12:07 PM In reply to this comment (#1710782) If evolutionary theory had anything to do with the abhorrent policies of the Nazis, it wasn't in a form that any competent biologist would recognise. Natural selection is so called because it happens *naturally*, not because a group of fanatics want to get rid of people they don't like. Artificial selection antedates Darwin by millennia, and it was those principles combined with racist pseudoscience and a bastardised version of German pagan mythology that the Nazis based their policies on. You might as well blame creationism for the slave trade on the basis that one major justification for continuing this evil practice was that its victims were created inferior. (A far cry from the brotherhood of man liberalism found in a lot of modern creationist rhetoric, including this film, I'm sure you'll agree.) Of course, none of this has any relevance whatsoever to the scientific value of evolutionary theory. (Reply to this) |
