Jonah Hill, Louis C.K. Join Ricky Gervais' This Side of the Truth
Project marks Gervais' directorial debut.
Now that he's done with his HBO series Extras, Ricky Gervais is concentrating on his next film project -- and he just got company.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jonah Hill and Louis C.K. have joined the cast of This Side of the Truth, which Gervais is co-writing and co-directing with Matt Robinson. Jennifer Garner and Rob Lowe were already attached to the comedy, which is, in the Reporter's words, "based in a world where lying doesn't exist." From the article:
The story centers on Mark (Gervais), an average guy who discovers his newfound ability to tell untruths and uses the skill in his effort to seduce a woman (Garner) who is way out of his league. Hill will play Mark's humorous neighbor who also suffers from depression, while Louis C.K. will play Mark's loser best friend.
Production on the MRC project begins in April.

on Feb 08 2008 05:22 AM Extras and "Lucky Louie", HBO's two best comedies in recent years, both win Emmies and Golden Globes, critics praise them, yet both are cancelled after very short runs. Its seems perfect that Gervais and Louis CK should be in a film together, maybe they could teach HBO a lesson. (Reply to this) |

on Feb 08 2008 06:07 AM Extras wasn't cancelled. Gervais and Merchant had only plannned a short run, just as they did with The Office. The British seem to have a very different approach to series than we do. They often to very short runs of shows, like Life on Mars. HBO's actual cancellations border on the criminal, such as Deadwood, Rome, Comeback. I personally didn't care much for Lucky Louie. (Reply to this) |

on Feb 08 2008 07:48 AM Oh Dear. From the brief synopsis it all sounds a bit trite (Carrey's 'Liar Liar' is screaming out at me). Gervais seems to have gone off the boil a little of late. That being said, he is usually a very good writer, and it seems like a pretty good cast is being assembled. Let's just see how this one pans out and hope Ricky has something original up his sleeve... on Feb 08 2008 10:34 AM Gervais, Garner, and Lowe co-directing? Talk about a strange combo. And this concept would be the opposite of Liar Liar. Could work for Gervais' real life Costanza-ish style of humor. (Reply to this) |

on Feb 08 2008 11:32 AM AREDE: Boy did you read that wrong. "Matt Robinson. Jennifer Garner and Rob Lowe were already attached to the comedy..." That was a period. It looks like this: . Isn't she pretty? You put those at the end of sentences to indicate a full stop so that when people quickly scan an article and then decide to post without looking closely they look like idiots. PERIOD And it's nothing like 'Liar Liar' Gervais lives in a world were everyone tells the truth and he 'discovers' the ability to lie. Sounds pretty genius to me. But what do I know, I just observe punctuation. (Reply to this) |

on Feb 08 2008 02:02 PM Loved the comment on punctuation. Well said. I thought it was hilarious that anyone would think 4 people were co-directing. Four Rooms anyone? But, since the non-ignorant know who is directing, and have actually read the premise, I agree. This sounds pretty genius. (Reply to this) |

on Feb 08 2008 03:46 PM In reply to this comment (#1562246) Um, you can't mention criminal cancellations by HBO without citing Carnivale, which deserved at least one more season. And though I'm most certainly in the minority, I really liked John From Cincinatti and was eager to see where the show would have gone in its second season. Too bad that HBO looked to annoint that quirky, "cultish" series as the heir to The Sopranos (a distinction that SHOULD have gone to Mad Men - which HBO foolishly took a pass on) and essentially set it up to fail. 'John' should have been HBO's maiden attempt into late night scripted programming. It would have been a perfect offering for Friday night at 11:00pm (alternating with Bill Maher) or at midnight (following Maher). (Reply to this) |

on Feb 08 2008 06:19 PM mjsieber, Haha, I did read that wrong. That's what happens when you're reading at work and don't want to get in trouble... But hey, you could have been a little less rude. Try taking a valium or 10. (Reply to this) |

on Feb 08 2008 06:22 PM Also, my name is not spelled "arede". Boy did you read that wrong. Maybe you should have read it correctly instead of jumping on the insult boat and in turn made yourself look like an even worse idiot. Thanks! (Reply to this) |

on Feb 09 2008 09:15 AM Sounds hilarious. Excellent cast. I look forward to this. Hopefully it doesn't end up being PG. From the looks of co-writer Matt Robinson's filmography (Sesame Street, The Cosby Show, The Waltons, Save the Children), this might be the route the film takes. (Reply to this) |

on Feb 09 2008 07:30 PM Aqueryan Reloaded: You're right, I did forget Carnivale. And I like John from Cincinnatti, too. Very strange, but I wanted to see more. I didn't know Mad Men had been turned down by HBO; what's going on with them? Cancelling or passing on one great show after another... This premise, particularly in the hands of Gervais, sounds great and I'm really looking forward to it. (Reply to this) |
