In "Ernest Hemingway," viewers learn how this mysterious, and ultimately tragic, writer sharpened his terse style as a foreign correspondent during the First World War. His anti-war classic "A Farewell to Arms," which centers on an ill-destined love affair in Spain between a U.S. ambulance driver and an English nurse, was based on his experiences. Although many critics make much of Hemingway's preoccupation with machismo -- exhibited in novels such as "The Old Man and the Sea" -- his ability to convey sexual ambiguity is less heralded. "The Sun Also Rises," for instance, tells a story of gender reversal among American expatriates in France. [More]
