Double Your Fanboys, Double Your Fun
...That's what the Weinsteins are hoping, anyway.

Discuss Article
It's been pushed back for months and been the subject of all sorts of troubling rumors, but according to The Weinstein Company, Kyle Newman's Fanboys is finally coming out. Twice, in fact.

The film, a comedy about a group of Star Wars fans who drive cross-country in 1998 to break into George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch so their dying friend can see The Phantom Menace, has been something of a legend in Star Wars circles for years -- and with a cast that includes Jay Baruchel, Kristen Bell, Seth Rogen, and Dan Fogler, a person could be forgiven for assuming The Weinstein Company would want to get it into theaters as soon as possible.

But no. As popular legend has it, Harvey Weinstein was troubled by...well, the film's basic storyline, really. Let's let The Hollywood Reporter lay it all out:

Insiders said the root of the problem was Weinstein's issue with the underlying story in "Fanboys." The cross-country adventure is put in motion because one of the characters is facing cancer. Late last year, the company decided it would do reshoots, hiring Judd Apatow's producing partner Shauna Robertson to oversee a $2 million reshoot of four scenes done by director Steve Brill ("Drillbit Taylor"). That, combined with re-editing, created a version that excised the cancer subplot.

One "insider" goes on to tell the Reporter that "Harvey feels it's hard to market, especially with this cast," which totally makes perfect sense; everyone in Hollywood knows that the last thing you want when marketing a film is a bunch of young, up-and-coming stars. Whatever the reasons, and whatever happened behind the scenes, one thing's for certain: Fanboys' original August 2007 release date came and went -- and so did its new January 2008 release.

Yesterday, The Weinstein Company put an end to all the speculation, sort of, by announcing that both versions of the film will be released on DVD. Someday. Maybe after one or both versions are released to theaters. In their own words:

The Weinstein Company announced today that it plans to jointly release two versions of its highly anticipated film, "Fanboys," on home video, with the Company exploring options for its theatrical release. In recent weeks, Star War fans nationwide have built a multi-tiered grassroots effort to voice their strong support for one of the earlier versions of the film, including a campaign which generated over 300,000 emails in support for the film. Based on the tremendous feedback and interest from the fans, today's announcement will ensure both versions will be equally available within the marketplace.

At least one group of fans, the Weinstein-boycotting fanboy battalion that calls itself the 501st, was not impressed:

This is clearly a vain attempt by the Weinstein Co. to avert 'Star Wars' fans' impending boycott of all of their films. It's not going to work, Darth Weinstein. There was never any doubt that you would release both versions of the movie on DVD, probably months apart, so as to leech as much money from 'Star Wars' fans as possible. Our boycott will continue until the Weinstein Co. announces that they are returning control of 'Fanboys' to the 'Star Wars' fans who made it, releasing the original version in theaters and doing away with their anti-fan version of the film altogether.

Well that was a good idea while it lasted...

Harvey: it's time to evaluate your choice in profession. The cafe I had lunch at yesterday was looking for a dishwasher. Also grocery baggers where I buy my groceries make pretty decent tips. Suffice to say you'll make more money at either than you will marketing films to niche markets your completely out of touch with.

it's a little hard to guage the actual level of anticipation for a film called 'fanboys' when fanboys themselves are the ones who generate buzz in the first place. just saying, there may be a slight lack of objectivity among fanboys of the movie 'fanboys.' ya know? but i was sure this would get its run in theaters, and i might even have gone out to see it.

has the weinstein company had a single hit besides 'hoodwinked'? and come on, how are they gonna say that comedy auiences can't handle a serious issue like disease when two of the biggest comedies of last year were based on every young person's biggest fear: having a baby (ok fine, third biggest next to herpes and AIDS). it's OK harv, a bunch of people in america get cancer, we can handle the earth-shattering plotline ya jerk-off.

jesus RT can you guys fix this comment box issue where it breaks words and drops them to the next line? this has gone on for a month. IT'S RIDICULOUS that a site that gets up to 60 to 120 MILLION hits a day (wiki) can't solve an issue from web design 101. get your game up.

No matter how they market it or what one detail of the story line is, it's a movie about a Star Wars-fan road trip. Assuming that the majority of Star Wars fanboys go to see it, which is a safe bet, it will almost assuredly be a hit, even if mainstream audiences don't go. There are enough Star Wars fanboys to be able to be defined as comparable to a mainstream audience on their own. Besides that... I've been waiting to see this since at least a year ago. Release the movie already. "Nobody calls Han Solo a d-bag!"

I just have to say I don't give a flying damn about any cancer sub plot I just want to see the F***ing film. Stop teasing me and release it. I don't care what version cause it will be funny either way.

Oh and the isn't the 501st supposed to be Vader (the king of badA$$e$ and hurting people) personal leigion and do all kinds of dirt so why are they boycotting a movie (just because one of the fans has cancer....as if star wars fans can't get cancer) when they are responsible for killing alot of wookies. None of them deserve to wear the imperial uniform!

.....VADER 4 LYFE BI%CH#S!!!!!!!!!!!

Jar Jar Christ in a tutu, I REEEEAAALLY wish these fanboys would quit calling him "Darth" Weinstein, as if he could ever earn such a kick-ace title. Whatever happened to the good old standard nickname of "douchebag"?

And where the frak is "5-25-77"??? Is it coming to DVD?

Xenogears -

The young daughther of a 501st member died from cancer in 2006, so I can understand their need for the storyline to remain intact. But they should just quit disgracing the name "Darth" on someone so petty as Weinstein.

Im still gonna boycott if they dont release the original cancer story line version. There just gonna do a double dip DVD release with the 2 version. No matter even if they say the different version is good I still wont see it, I will only see it if they release the original camcer story version.

Well its out now in the US at least. Though with a measly 55 theaters its hardly gonna make much of an impact, and even with the original much needed cancer sub-plot intact, it sounds to me like Weinstein is having the last laugh. A neurotic monkey could market a film better than that over-zealous narcissistic jackass!

As was said in both the Bible and the Qur'an 'Fanboys shall inherit the Earth' so thannkfully we have that to look forward to at least. On the Fanboy front, there is another film/documentary being made called 'The People vs George Lucas' (www.peoplevsgeorge.com), its about whether fans still love the bearded wonder or hate him for messing with the SE's and prequils etc. They're asking for contributors to have a go at filming themselves, been thinking about it for ages, and after the Fanboy debacle, think i will.
