Critical Consensus: Critics Not Tickled "Pink"
by Tim Ryan | February 09, 2006
Discuss Article
An incompetent French detective ("The Pink Panther"). Eight million ways to die ("Final Destination 3"). Harrison Ford looking frantic, then looking really, really mad ("Firewall"). The Man in the Yellow Hat ("Curious George"). It could only be one thing: this week's wide releases!

Steve Martin and Shawn Levy have some pretty big shoes to fill -- namely, Peter Sellers' and Blake Edwards' -- with their revival of "The Pink Panther." And critics say that, to quote Inspector Clouseau, they have failed where others have succeeded. The new film is a prequel to the famed series; the French government can't find a master detective, so Jacques Clouseau is recruited to solve a murder. Critics say the movie isn't all that bad, but Martin, funny as he is, is not Sellers, who broke the mold for the character. At 31 percent on the Tomatometer, this is one is a "beumbe."

"Final Destination" fans, you know the drill: A group of kids didn't get on a plane that exploded, thereby cheating death, so therefore, death, in the form of Rube Goldberg, is out to get them. It's amazing that they've made three movies that began with such a premise. What's even more amazing is the fact that, according to the scribes, they keep getting better. "Final Destination 3" is currently at 52 percent on the Tomatometer (the original: 31 percent; the sequel: 46 percent). Still, the scribes say this one doesn't quite transcend the genre.

Is there anyone in the movies who's better at looking frantic than Harrison Ford? And is there anyone who's played more characters defending their families from danger? "Firewall" tells the story of a bank security expert who must rescue his wife and child from a ruthless kidnapper. Despite a high-tech update to the formula, critics say this shopworn thriller is more dour and less energetic than similar efforts. At 30 percent on the Tometometer, critics say to block this "Firewall."

There's something we've been curious about_: Would animated features ever return to a simpler, gentler tone, jettisoning non-stop antics and pop culture references? The answer is yes, and it comes in the form of everyone's favorite inquisitive simian, "Curious George." The critics say the sheer joyful modesty of this enterprise is one of its best qualities, and the crisp 2-D animation is bright and colorful. At 74 percent on the Tomatometer, this one's looking like a winner, by "George."

Recent Harrison Ford Movies:
------------------------------------
30% -- Hollywood Homicide (2003)
61% -- K-19: The Widowmaker (2002)
92% -- Apocalypse Now: Redux (2001)
45% -- What Lies Beneath (2000)
19% -- Random Hearts (1999)

Steve Martin should burn. "Cheaper by the Dozen", "Cheaper by the Dozen 2", "The Pink Panther". What a tard. Hes just doin it for the money. I mean...its not even interesting. Come on. I REALLY think "Firewall" will go #1 because all of these people who like Harrison Ford and like those kind of action movies that make you think a little. I am going to see it. I might go see "FD3", just to see what sick stuff they can come up with now.

Rotten!
I think we can safely say that the only fresh wide release will definitely not be #1. My pick is FD3, only because it seems like everybody loves to go see a crappy horror movie. Although, perhaps Pink Panther will hit #1 for the same reason!

Bleh. Ford just doesn't really amuse me. I, personally, am at a loss to see why Martin and Ford are still acting. Damn seniors. Nah, I think Ford is good. I just don't like his style of movies.

Anyway, I'm a Final Destination fan. It looks grand. I'm a sucker for people perishing in tanning beds and jumping off of crashing roller coasters. :-)

The Pink Panther wasn't that bad. Was it as good as the orginal? Nope. Was it an amazing movie? Nope. But it was on a whole quite amusing. The Clive Owen cameo was quite funny too.

Final Destination 3 was a good time. Great death scenes, oblivious characters (surprised?). A little better than the 2nd one, not as good as the first. Still very cool. I hope it makes lots of money!

Boxofficemojo predicts Pink Panther at number one with $22 million. Followed by FD3, Firewall and Curious George. They're usually spot on. I saw a free screening of FD3 and didn't care for it, but I would like to see Curious George, an old childhood fave.

Steve Martin has no shame.

Cheers,
Kevin

I've decided to see the monkey today. I'm going to pass on "Panther" until it comes out on DVD. I couldn't care less about any of the other films.

I saw FD3 this sunday
and it was good maybe even a little better than expected. It was just a "fun" movie with a beginning, middle and end. Some of the things I liked were there were no herky jerky fast motion, people didnt vaporize when they got killed-they went splat!
FD3 should be the last one!
I am always a little careful driving home from the theatre after a Final Destination movie :-)
After seeing Brokeback Mountain last week and FD3 today my movie theatre experience is done, exiting on a high note.
If something good comes out I will wait for the DVD.

... the Pink Panther is # 1 in the box office. I was right !! Do I get a prize ?! ^_^ Oh, wait, I also tried to predict that Pink Panther was getting the worst tomatometer of the week and I was wrong. But that is because nobody warned me that an atrocity like "London" was premiering this week as well ! :-P

that settles it!!! there is no god...why oh why must you convince audiences to actually pay good money to watch a piece of crap like "Panther", and let all these trashy movies take the top spot week after week?? im tellin ya if another crappy movie takes #1 next week, I dont know what ill do...but next weeks lineup looks to have its variety..Freedomland looks to be most interesting to me.

U know. yall saying the pink panther is terrible probably havent seen it. I found it quite amusing, not a masterpiece, but pretty funny. I thought it was going to be terrible (because of the critics) when my girlfriend dragged me thier to see it, and was surprised to be actually laughing. Its not terrible, not great, but pretty good. There have been plenty (and I mean plenty) of movies that have got #1 that are far worse than this, like all those crappy horor movies that came out around this time last year.

well if you think about it, boxofficemojo said pink panther was supersaturated in theatres. over 3500+! while FD3 only had about 2800.
