The movie... Documentarian Errol Morris directs THE FOG OF WAR, a captivating look at Robert S. McNamara, who served as the Secretary of Defense during the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. The movie does not exclusively focus on this part of McNamara's career, however, and instead gives a broad overview of the man he was, his multitude of roles--a Harvard Business School graduate, a Colonel in the Air Force during WWII, president of Ford Motor Company--and his opinions on a variety of historical topics. Inspired by two books written by McNamara--IN RETROSPECT (1995) and WILSON'S GHOST (2001)--Morris gives McNamara a forum to talk about the decisions he made and the influence he had during his career. At the age of 85, McNamara has gained necessary perspective to do just that. Sharp as a tack, loaded with charisma, and generally fascinating, McNamara easily carries the film with his revealing interviews. Meanwhile, Morris's use of archival footage--along with maps and other effective visual aids--add context to McNamara's commentary, and Philip Glass's ominous, pulsing score gives the film's important subject matter the gravity it deserves. Reviews for The Fog of War
The Fog of War has a central figure who himself is shrouded in a fog of mystery -- and the “truth” becomes harder to decipher or even intuit.
A warning beacon about fog conditions that never subside but only shift to American military involvement in other parts of the world.
There is nothing simple about Robert McNamara and nothing simplistic about Errol Morris's involving look at him.
Os ensinamentos de McNamara deixam algo claro: caso Bush estivesse no poder quando ocorreu a crise dos mísseis cubanos, provavelmente não estaríamos aqui hoje.
If there's one movie that ought to be studied by military and civilian leaders around the world at this treacherous historical moment, it is The Fog of War.
An exceptionally relevant and morally thought provoking documentary about America's immoral use of the weapons of mass destruction.
Beautifully edited with never-before seen clips from the Depression, WWI, WWII, Vietnam to show how Robert McNamara changed from a hawk to a dove.
What becomes clear is that McNamara — often confident and convincing — is not an entirely reliable narrator of his own story.
Now, in Errol Morris' fascinating documentary, an 85-year-old McNamara looks squarely into Morris' camera and, with his eyes occasionally yielding tears, rehashes his life with a mixture of guilt, pride, candor, sadness and self-delusion.
A superb survey of the last half-century of American politics and one that has much to say about the current administration's attitudes.
Evidently mellowed by time and experience, McNamara is a man whose revelations and life make compelling viewing.
There aren't any easy answers, and devotees of Errol Morris should know that going in.
[Errol] Morris only gives us one, biased viewpoint in his document of American history but it is a succinct, clearly told memoir by a remarkable man...
The Fog of War is one of the most stylistically stunning of Morris's works
A stunning documentary about former secretary of defense Robert S. McNamara that casts new light on his role in major American political events of the 20th century.
